Jayhawks - Tampa to Tulsa

Just learned to play this a few weeks ago so I have been giving it a lot of work, especially when I am playing for the children. last night they fell asleep quickly, before I got to that one - so for some bizarre reason it has been in my head all day today.

Please don't ask; ease my worried mind and take my hand.

Very early morning song stuck in my head...

Vincent - Don McLean

Woke up humming it. :)
“Life has got a habit of not standing hitched. You got to ride it like you find it. You got to change with it. If a day goes by that don't change some of your old notions for new ones, that is just about like trying to milk a dead cow.” -Woody Guthrie

Vincent is both beautiful and haunting. Remember a time in my life when I'd walk around humming this one too.

Broken Plow ~ Chris Knight

Inspiration came after reading The Grapes of Wrath.

From a USA TODAY review of the record:

For the family in the Grapes of Wrath-inspired Broken Plow, it's the one that connects Dust Bowl Oklahoma with fertile California.

Would love to see Ellis add this one to his arsenal of covers.

Coincidentally I had this CD in my car over the weekend, and just now WXPN in Philly is playing what is easily my favorite song by this artist.

Shotgun Down The Avalanche ~ Shawn Colvin

I still remember my best friend playing this Album as we cruised the streets of Houston, Tx....back when it was brand spanking new. The whole record, Steady On just blew me away. John Levanthal enhances the songs with some of the coolest stuff I'd ever heard.

Hubcaps even!!! 8)

Bob Dylan - Forever Young

Sang it to my children last night... looking at how much they have grown and wishing they hang on to the beauty of being young, even as they grow.......

May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young.

When Patty Griffin's latest came out, some called it her masterpiece. Those were strong words for an artist with so many great songs and records to date. I have to say I think they were onto something. :D

I listened to this one just now in the quiet of the new day and was amazed at just how beautiful her voice sounds here.

My Song of the Day

Postby JennyLevE » Wed Mar 28, 2007 7:59 pm

My song of the day is Did Galileo Pray by Ellis Paul because my postman brought me truth today when I got accepted to one of my top choice colleges! 8)
--Jen

I guess I partially have Ellis to thank for that. He not only inspires me daily, but also contributed the quote about which my main college essay was written.

Thanks Ellis!

Is it the CASTLE, or the SAND
That you miss when the TIDE comes along?”

Jenny - many congratulations on getting in to your chosen college - well done!

The song also resonated with me yesterday after reading a report that some of Galileo's coloured drawings of the moon had been discovered after being 'lost' for 400 years. The book 'The Starry Messenger' appartently turned up in a South American collection, it has been authenticated as genuine by various parties and the University of Padua, where Gallileo taught geometry, mechanics and astronomy, hopes to buy it.

God's Promise ~ Ellis

I have been going through a few challenges over the last few weeks and was throwing myself a pity party. This song has helped me snap out of it. Well that and a friend telling me "sh*t happens". That combination of the eloquent and the vulgar put me on the path to cheeriness again. :)

Bonnie, we all need those little reminders from time to time. Coincidentally, my Christian Lenten daily mediatation book included a message about Passover this morning. And both messages are very similar to what you just related from "God's Promise". I love that music's messages often come through when we can't hear those same messages when they come from the mouth of a friend or a book or a TV show....or any other number of sources....

It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Song Of The Day

Postby pre10der » Fri Oct 05, 2007 12:11 pm

My song of the day, songs of the weekend, is anything by Marc Cohn. I am going to see him play tomorrow night, Saturday 10/6, at a local Arts Centre. It is only 10 minutes from house. I don't have to make the hour plus trek into Chicago to see a concert! WAHOO! :P

I'll be listening to Cohn on my ipod when I work out today, getting psyched for tomorrow.

Aren't we listening to any music out there folks ?

Song of the day.... "There We Are" by James Taylor, off his JT album. I was working on re-learning it last night on my guitar. Wondered if James ever sings it anymore, and if so, has he replaced "Carly I do" with "Darling I do" throughout, or something else......

"Here we are.... like children forever
Taking care of one another
While the world goes on without us all around us."

Don't imagine he would still say Carly on that one!

I did see JT on TV at the Red Sox game Saturday night. That is the night it went late late late!! His wife and 2 little boys were with him there.

His daughter Sally had a baby boy at the begining of October, so I bet there will be plenty of hand me downs!!

I am a big fan of Carly's music. She sang many songs about her kids and had them sing on a bunch of her songs when they were young, (much like EP has on Wabi Sabi!!) I wonder if the same will continue with her grandchildren!!

Ring of Fire ~ Johnny Cash.

I heard it on the radio this morning and it made me think of Don Con. I know Ellis should come to mind, but that interpretive dance that Don does? Man that's catchy.

I saw Lucy Kaplansky play this song at a festival for Stone Soup a few years ago, it was the day after Johnny Cash died and she nailed it!! I never really gave the song much thought before that but now I love it.. She included it on her latest CD..

I have to confess that I don't really know this song....

Not to say I haven't heard it a dozen times, because I have.... :)

I'm just not sure I cold recite any of the lyrics beyond the chorus.

I've seen the the movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and they perform it. I've seen Ellis Paul perform the song I think. I've seen archives of The Johnny Cash tv show and he sings it.

But I sit here right now asking myself what this song is about. It's just one of those tunes I've taken for granted all these years.

In a nutshell, what is this song about? I'll get a hold of the lyrics and try and once and for all know. Strange, too, it's such a classic.

Went to NYC to see Wicked this weekend and that was totally awesome. While we were there we went to dinner at Ellen's Stardust Dinner, (right next to Mama Mia) anyway, they employ singing waiters and waitresses. We no sooner sat down when someone started singing Ring Of Fire.. I was singing right along, having just read and listened to the lyrics the night before.. Actually the wait staff does a great job singing and serving the food. Lots of fun!!

ALSO while we were there, we traveled around a bit.. not sure how or why we got off the Subway when we did but the first thing I saw when I looked up was Joes Pub.. big red flags flying in front of the building.. I told my family Ellis plays there all the time!! ( I wasn't sure that was the actual place but a quick look at his tour page and confirmed that sure enough it is!!

Patti....your post tonight cracked me up. Especially since I knew you guys were going to be seeing WICKED in NYC this weekend.

When I noticed your new post in the song of the day thread I said to myself, okay, Patti, which song grabbed ya?

When we see WICKED we can't stop singing a few of those songs for days.

"nobody mourns the wicked"
or.....
"POP-U-LAR.....you're going to be popular."

You're lucky you got Ring Of Fire, instead. Trust me.......

ps -- cool story about getting off the subway at Joe's Pub. 8)
pss -- we dined at the same diner.....fun stuff, indeed. :D

Tumbleweed ~ Toni Price

Revisited this song a bunch tonight when it snuck into my car on a blind pick. What's a blind pick? It's when you grab music on the go without looking and come what may...that's what you're gonna hear. It's a lil game we used to play all the time...and every so often just pinch ourselves at how lucky we had gotten...to hear something this good, on a blind pick. Anyway, loved this song way back when......still do. 8)

Bonus time.....

Here's Toni Price playing the Continental Room in Austin.

I think the is the same thing I think when I load 5 cd's in and push shuffle!! The song that comes up always seem to be "just the one" I wanted to hear!!

Funny thing the other day, when I heard the first few notes of a song I thought, oh I don't remember putting EP LIve At Passim in.. but I hadn't , it was the first few notes to Wabi Sabi and I had mistaken it for "Two Bends In The Road"!!! Love BOTH those songs, so it really was a win win situation!!

Win You Back Suzanne ~ The Gathering Field

This song off Lost In America was a topic of big debate in the car this afternoon. My wife loves the song and is hearing it for the first few times. It's reached OCD status for her and when I realized she was new to the song I asked her if she knew what it was about. I'll just say that after a half dozen listens in the car together (and non stop lobbying on my part that she see it my way :P ) we remain on opposite sides of the discussion. In my opinion it's one of the best songs Bill Deasy has ever written.

Today it's Poetry Man covered very nicely by Queen Latifah... I think she has a gorgeous voice and so when I saw the CD in the used section at Hastings, I picked it up.

I put this song on repeat in the car this morning... 8)

Yep Paddy, that's the one. I love that song and Queen Latifah's version is just beautiful. She really does it justice.

In these tough times a song like this resonates all the more.....

Change the World by Chuck E Costa on his CD "From the Rooftops"

Can one person really make a difference?
Who knows?
If a man living on the street, who cannot see,
Can move his hands faster than your eyes
What does that mean?
Here goes.
If a blind man can do magic, then you can change the world.

Can the penny of a child in a donation box,
Amount to anything even close to a lot?
Can a penny make a difference?
All I know is that without 1 you can't have 2.
And without 2 you can't have 3 and without 3…no 4.
Is it that simple…ABC, once I get started you follow me?
We'll see.

If a blind man can do magic, then you can change the world.

It only takes a pebble, to make the whole pond ripple.
Throw yourself in.
