The Oscars

Postby Patti » Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:34 am

I saw most of the show last night and I am happy to say that Falling Slowly was performed (as were all the song nominations) and WON!!!!

When it was time for the winners to give their speach there was only time for the red head (name?) to talk but after the break John Stewart escorted the girl (name??) back to stage to let her have her 15 seconds of fame!! John seemed truly happy that they were the winners!!

I would never have seen this movie, (which I DID really like) if it weren't for the discussion about it here...thanks :)

Okay...here we go.....an Oscar thread....let her rip. Thanks , Patti. :D

Highlights?
Lowlights?

I only watched briefly, knowing Tivo had my back. Here's something I found interesting, and kind of sad, early on. Host John Stewart, sensing the show had been lackluster, so far, said after someone's acceptance speech: NOW THERE'S AN OSCAR MOMENT.

They were few and far between, I thought. I kept telling my wife that I thought the reason Jack Nicholson was wearing those HUGE sunglasses was so he could catch a few zzzzzzzzzzz's when the show called for it.

Other highlights? Only one for me. George Clooney. *Swoon* :D

Okay...a lowlight comes to mind, only it was on the red carpet, before the show began. Ryan Seacrest, host of American Idol, was on the red carpet interviewing celebs as they strolled by on their way inside the Kodak Theatre. Side note: crazy as this sounds....I miss Joan Rivers in this role. I felt that Ryan Seacrest asked some really ridiculous questions, often way too personal and just not fodder for the masses. Like the time he asked one actress, soon to have a baby, if she planned on breastfeeding.

There were more, believe me. The real bizzarre event happened as Ryan was talking to 2 of Hollywood's biggest actresses, Laura Linney and Jennifer Garner, who happens to Ben Affleck's wife. ALL OF A SUDDEN, a hardly recognizable Gary Busey interjects himself into the mix and scares the living daylights out of them all. Jennifer Garner seemed visibly shaken and asked, only half jokingly: "yes, Ryan, where is Ben???"

Personally, I blame Ryan....clearly Gary Busey was being a nuisance. He crossed some serious boundaries when he jumped into their live on air interview. He was obviously under the influence of something. With Gary all over actress Laura Linney, what does Ryan do to get Gary off of Laura? He says to Gary, "What about Jennifer Garner?"

It's kind of like coming to the aid of someone being atttacked by a vicious animal by drawing attention to the person standing closeby.

Not a Ryan Seacrest highlight reel, but one the media will be on for days.

I'm glad I missed the pre-show stuff!

I saw the Busey incident replayed later on E!. Ryan was really trying to get control, and Busey was really inappropriate. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Highlights, other than the whole Once lovefest were:
Daniel Day-Lewis. I love him.
I also enjoyed the military presenters via satellite.

Lowlights? Tilda Swindon's dress. What was that thing anyway? A drape? A sheet? She more than made up for her outfit during her speech. She got a little George Clooney dig in there. Accusing him of wearing his Batman suit to the set of Micheal Clayton.

Hey Bonnie....

I had a differnet take on Tilda's remarks about George in his Batman suit. To me, it sounded as though she was really thanking him for keeping things light on the set. Like maybe it helped her between takes and such.

George Clooney is known as the KING of practical jokers. So my guess is that he surprised cast mates from time to time, one of which Tilda was mentioning in her acceptance speech. Can you imagine coming out of your movie set trailer all in character and prepared to do a scene and BATMAN is there hanging upside down. She even took the time to mention the nipples on the suit.

The funniest thing I thought she said when talking about George Clooney:

"All the women carrying on about George Clooney.....I just don't get it."

She was asked about it in the press room and she said that her remark was just a little payback for all of his practical jokes. She was also expecting retribution. :D

I'll have to go back and see her speech again now... :D

Thank heavens for Tivo is all I can say.

It'd be cool to access a list, if one exists somewhere, of all the practical jokes George Clooney has pulled on his castmates. Seems the other big George Clooney news of the day was that he brought his steady girl with him to the Oscars and George has hardly ever shown up at one of these with a date. I think it's serious, girls.

Don't shoot the messenger!!!! :P

Ha.. too funny Paddy. I've not really been a big fan of George's but I think the older he gets the better he gets...and he does seem pretty funny in his interviews.

Also, I think the "best and worst" dressed lists/pictures aren't very accurate this year. Come on Nichole Kidman on the worst dressed list.. never!! And certainly not in a beautiful gown with a slight baby belly showing!!

John Stewart was funny when he said that during the commericials the audience sits around and picks on what "we" are wearing!!

Okay....a little off topic here for this bit of Oscar trivia. Had Oprah on today as background noise with her guest Valerie Bertinelli. She's got a new tell all book out now about her life with Rocker Eddie Van Halen. She pulls no punches it appears. She talks all about what it was like living life in the fast lane. She's getting her life together, now.....ect.

Before she met Eddie Van Halen, when she was all of 19, she dated famed movie director Steven Spielberg. Valerie had auditioned for a role in Steven's soon to be made Indiana Jones movie, the first one. She wasn't right for the part, she says, and she knew it. Steven was taken by the young starlet (she was already a tv star with her hit tv show) and sent her flowers and thanked her and of course, asked her out.

They dated for a short time, maybe 3 months. It's storytelling at it's best. Oprah points her at what it was exactly that brought about their breakup. Oh, that's easy Valerie says. I was over at Steven's house in Coldwater Canyon, he has a beautiful home there. Well, of course he does Oprah says, He's Steven Spielberg!!! So anyway, She's over at his house cooking dinner one night, pasta in fact. She's Italian, afterall, and she's set to make him a nice meal. Everything's fine until she pulls out the garlic.

OH NO!!! No garlic for me, Steven says to her. She said she knew then and there there was no hope for them. She could never be with a man who did not like garlic.
