2008 Grammy Awards

Postby paddyinthepub » Mon Feb 11, 2008 11:25 am

Thought it might be nice to open a discussion about last night's show.

Did you watch? Were you surprised by any of the winners? Were you "wowed" by any of the performances?

Highlights for me:

Amy Winehouse chalking up all those wins....love her record. Waited all night as they teased that her performance was "up next" and for me, it was well worth the wait. They let her perform 2 songs....starting with "I'm no good" followed by her mega and award winning "Rehab." Ironically they let her out of rehab for this performance. She seemed truly shocked to have taken "record of the year" honors. Stellar performance!!!

Another shocker was Herbie Hancock's "The Joni letters" taking home Album of the Year honors. Guess I'll have to check it out.

Brad Paisley, to me the American version of Keith Urban, with his cheeky song about taking a girl on a date out in the countryside just so he can check her for "ticks." Clever song and powerful performance.

Vince Gill, after Ringo handed him his grammy, saying, "I just got a grammy from a Beatle, how cool is that?"

Look forward to other comments about the show. :D

Paddy,

Last night at about 6pm I thought "I have to remember to put the Grammys on at 8pm". The next thing I knew, it was morning. I read the Sunday paper, watched "You've got Mail" on TNT, then "Perry Mason" on Hallmark, talked on the phone to a friend a bit then hit the sack. It wasn't until BeckyG called me this morning in the way to work to tell me that Woody won, that I realized that I had forgotten to watch! Yoy.

Thanks for your highlights. I hope others share a few as well. :)

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Karen

In this day and age, I guess you could see "clips" of just about anything related to music on tv as it ends up on youtube sooner or later. A tough way to watch a three and a half hour show, but so is sitting there watching for 3 and a half hours on a Sunday night. Although I thought the pace of last night's show and the overall flow of superb performances and lifetime award recipients and grammy presentations made it feel like it was over before you knew it.

Another highlight comes to mind....The Beatles tribute. 8)

And later Ringo and George Martin up there receving a grammy for "Love" and Ringo laughing at himself for still using the phrase "FAB."
