How 'bout the good old rolling question?

Postby Jalapenos » Wed Jun 21, 2006 4:57 pm

Hopefully Paddy will be here soon to keep this rolling :)

What is your favorite thing to do when the weather gets warm?

If I'm feeling lazy I'll sit on my deck with the puppy and if I'm feeling motivated I'll run at the riverside park down the street. I did a little of both today.

Katie, you made my day. Thanks for the props.

"Lazy, I get so Lazy" , by Richard Shindell

I get pretty lazy when the weather is hot, but when it's warm:
driving long distances, windows down, music up, all by my lonesome.
Well, me and all the folks in the stories in the songs, anyway. No place to be, hours to kill, go wherever. Then my wife usually wakes me from my nap and dream with the shout of " HONEY " and 3 or 4 more things I could address on the honey-do list now that the weather has warmed my way.

Art House - I like films that make you think and you leave the cinema with lots of questions - those big blockbusters just don't do it for me.

Am trying to find out if 'Legend of Lucy Keyes' is going to be released over here. London has an annual film festival in the autumn and I'm hoping that it might get shown as they do feature independents.

I'm thinking sailboat - especially the one Ellis played on in Seattle.

The cable tv just went on the blink.

have known people who don't watch that much tv...or at all.

usually residents of California.

Now that's a tough question. I like the beach because of the feel of sand between the toes, but i would have to say Hiking in a mountain. I love that rain forrest smell, the fresh water springs and sitting over a rock ledge staring out into the wilderness just thinking about life in general.

Ever been to Australia? If not, would you ever travel here???

Thank God I'm a Country Boy ! I like visiting cities - for a few days or weeks at a time. Exploring them, tasting them, experiencing them. But let me live in the country please. I need the space and the time, the gentle rhythm of life, the dirt beneath my feet, beneath the birds, beneath the sky, open all around, ... getting carried away there.

Depends on what for, of course. (why I can't pick a favorite color...)

Blue for the sky, be it night or day. Blue for my competition colors, blue for clothing that seems to go with everything else in the closet, so easy to wear.
Blue for the sea (when it's being friendly).

Yellow for the golden tones of the sunrise or sunset. Yellow for the brilliant daylilies and coreopsis in my gardens, for the goldfinches flitting amongst the blackberries, for the butter-colored kitchen walls.
Yellow for the newly rising moon...

Guess that means someone else will have to really answer the question!

I'm going to have to "pull a Wendy":

Fields for the fireflies that twinkle like childhood daydreams on a warm summers' night

Forests for the sighing of the wind and the peaceful dappled shade on a late season hike.

While I may enjoy driving both, I mostly like the feel of an old car, one that has seen better days, like me. Just a lot of history and not too flashy or overly comfy. Point a to b kind of ride. I need a new car, just not ready to part ways with the old taurus sho just yet.

once upon a time, say before the advent of Starbucks, you had only 2 choices I can remember:

So, for you and yours, which was it?

Folgers or Maxwell House?

It was Folgers in our house and it was always on.

Maxwell House was the standard in my parents' home. Such a treat to wake up in the morning to that wonderful fresh coffee smell. (that was before I met college coffee: burned, greenish and oily... :P )

Watch the food channel all the time, never cook any of it. They make it look so easy....my wife tells me I'm a good cook, when i do. We still prefer to dine out mostly....but someday :!:

I'd say that I do best experimenting, with favorite ingredients, all the usual suspects....Say, if ya like the music of Maura O' Connell, she lists a few nice looking recipes on her website. I'll have to give them a try.

Sorry to break in here Jalapenos on your question, for which I don't really have an answer right now. Hey Jeff, wanted to ask you a question about Harry Chapin. There's a young kid out on the club cirquit doing tribute concerts. All Harry Chapin songs, and nails them. Heard of him? He was on the schedule at SCC but it came and went. Really like HC songs, too.

Now Back to your regularly scheduled rolling thread question.

(Hi everyone-I'm going to jump from lurking to answer this one)

My favorite summer holiday...My birthday (someday I'll realize that birthdays are not national holidays but until then... :) )

My second favorite or more traditional favorite summer holiday is Labor Day. My mom's family has a reunion in New Hampshire right near the state fair and its one of my favorite times. I can hang out and discuss baseball (Red Sox baseball...of course :D ) without the fear that being a Red Sox fan from New York State can have.

This means Paddy that I should answer your question with a definite yes there should be an asterix next to their name if they have been found to have been steriod users. My thought is if Pete Rose isn't eligible then perhaps those that are found to have used steriods to enhance their performance should have their future as a hall of famer looked at seriously as well. (Sorry I know that's more than anyone wanted to know about my baseball opinions  )

I guess that means its my turn to post a question...

When you're on vacation do you prefer to travel or stay home?

Nothing quite like a bunch of red - blooded Americans sitting around a forum on the Fourth Of July talking World Cup Soccer instead of America's passtime to bring out the Melindas among us.

Welcome Melinda, hope you'll chime in from time to time, I really liked your first at bat :!: The baseball * :?: is a tough one and you answered it well.

As for birthdays being holidays, why not :?: When I hit 30, I was determined to celebrate for 30 days. Every whim or want, should I or not :?:: sure, still in birthday mode :D Of course it's not so easy to carry on that long now!

Vacations home or away is an excellent question......though to most a no brainer. I say you can travel anytime, get worn out, sleep in a strange bed, feel the pressure of needing to cram it all in to the allotted time.

I go for vacations, true free time, to enjoy the comforts of home and
family, anytime and AT HOME :!:

I agree with your baseball comments, too. Well said.

Now for the rolling Q: Cubes, please. Less dilution, longer cooling.
There surely are beverages that benefit from crushed ice, though. They're mostly the sweet ones, so I guess it depends on what you're drinking!

Next Q: you have a free morning. Several hours to do with as you wish. Do you go for a run/ride? Sit in the shade with a good book? Something else? What?

Gee , really depends on who's grilling as I have had tasty and not so good on both choices. Ultimately, cuz I'm from Texas, a cheeseburger.

I've been in search of a good one since I left Houston and they're just hard to find somehow. And Philly? Forget about it, it's all about the cheesesteak up here so noone really bothers getting the burger just right.

Driving long distances by car, how often do you stop to just get out and stretch a bit? The rule I think is every 2 hours for about 10 min.

Sometimes I can go 5 hrs no problem, sometimes 45 min and I'm zzzzz.

When I bought my current car almost two years ago the first longish journey I took in it was to see my mother who lives just over a two hour drive away - there I was driving along when the dashboard started flashing at me '2h' - had no idea what this meant - the car was running ok so knowing that I'd be arriving at my destination before too long I thought that when I arrived I'd look at the instruction manual.

Hey ho! my car flashes a 'warning' sign after its been driven for a constant two hours and doesn't stop flashing unless I stop it for 15 minutes.

So in answer to the question......2hours....otherwise my car tells me off!!!

What's your favourite season - Spring, Summer, Autumn or should I say Fall for you guys, or Winter?

Jela,

Now that's funny. My father used to comment on cars he recently bought saying they were so fully loaded with options that on long trips the car would announce over the speakers : ''Tom, your bladder is near full and there is an Exxon Gas Station at this exit ''.

Have to say Springtime. I'm just ready to stop being cold. MLB on the Horizon and Summer is coming.....yep, Springtime.

The speed limit...pay much attention to it?

I'm all over it from too slow to too fast, but always with safety in mind.

Speed limits are funny things: on roads you know, they often seem too slow while on roads you don't know, can seem too fast.

One thing I've learned (particularly while driving a big trailer full of horses) is that if the speed limit suddenly drops, there's usually a reason and you need to be ready for it. So the speed limits seem very appropriate for a big, heavy rig, but may be excessive for a good-handling car. You just have to drive appropriately. That said, I usually try not to exceed 10mph above the posted limit, on the grounds that I don't like paying speeding tickets!

I'd say new, ocd usually, and then find the next new cd and repeat.

So much music, so little time. It's great to go back and re-discover old faves that just never grow old. The desert island discs usually make the roadtrips we often take.

Pump up the volume...how loud do you like it?...or low?

I like to roll up the car windows and blast it. So many people in my neighborhood like to broadcast their music to the rest of the world but I try not to do that. It has to be loud enough to drown out my voice, though. If I'm in the house, I'll only listen to music when I'm relaxing and then the volume is low. So, volume depends on the mood and the location.

Oh Katie, that's a hard one to choose!

There was the 6th grade teacher who made us memorize classic poetry, which I didn't care about at the time, but have thanked him for often since then.

Then there's the highschool biology teacher who made me sure that Biology was the field that I wanted to study for the rest of my life. (and I made it so!)

And finally the highschool ancient history teacher who made me WANT to read and learn about history... add to him the college professor in the same field who introduced us to the idea of reading original sources to better try to understand and interpret those times, and you've created a commited history addict and critical reader!

Lastly, how can I forget my 2nd grade teacher, who, among other things, taught us that handicapped animals (and people) aren't really all that different from the "normal" versions. She had a 3-legged dog that came to class often; it took years for me to understand the subtle message that was conveyed there.

I guess that means I don't have a true single favorite, but a group of great memories and appreciations.

What is/was your favorite subject of study and why?

The easy answers might be my mathj courses, or my computer courses. I loved them, but part of it also was thatthey came relatively easy to me.

But I think I might say my favorite may have been my Ancient History class from freshmen year of high school. It was difficult, and Miss Dorothy Dingwall (her real name, and she was a great teacher) took no crap from any of us, and was always pushing my class to think more about what we were reading and learning - and to learn how "Ancient History" and what was going in those times and those civilizations often had eerie echoes in events in Vietnam or Washington or Ireland or the Middle East. She left me with a lifelong desire to understand that histroy more, and even now I have a hard time passing up a istory Channel special on the Sumerians or a study of the rise and fall of the Roman government or any of a myriad of other topics. Thanks Miss Dingwall.

Next question:
Okay - related topic - first teacher you started out disliking, and grew to respect and admire as the year went on, and why ? Teachers are heroes.

Sometimes I liked a teacher in the beginning and then ended up disliking them in the end.... but never the other way around. I'm curious to read someone's reply to Jeff's question! I'm sure it will be inspiring. C'mon, anyone?

Okay, a college psych professor...tough, unrelenting, demanding, the work was unbelievable, and he didn't hold back in his critique...however, he held all of his students to very high standards and expectations, treating each one as an intelligent, capable, thoughtful being. He definitely taught me to be "an intelligent consumer of information." He's been a mentor ever since. I'm still gleaning lessons from things he said to me over twenty years ago.

Okay, question...uh oh...okay:

What is the farthest you've run at one time?

Awake or in my sleep ? ;) Cause the Boston Marathon was in my dreams a few times......

10 miles. And it was totally by accident. Was visiting the house of my then girl friend, who was at work I think. Wanted to go for a 5 or 6 mile run (my daily norm then), and her mother suggested a route (both her children ran cross country) that was "about" that long. After I finshed the run, a lot discouraged about how long it took and how strong I didn't feel her daughter informed me that her mom had made a slight mistake....

Next question:
Take a powerboat across the lake and enjoy the speed and the wind in your face, paddle a canoe across the lake and enjoy the scenery and the exercise, or take the sailboat across and get a little of the speed and the scenery ?
