Honoring Virginia Tech (with music and more)

Postby paddyinthepub » Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:15 pm

In light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, one would expect greater awareness of gun control laws and the need to improve them. Here's a way to help.

Here's a song Ellis Paul has placed on his myspace called Autobiography of a Pistol. Ellis is asking folks to pass it on.

Here's a link to Ellis' thoughts on the subject:

In memory of the victims, perhaps a memorial in music.

If you will, consider suggesting a song that deals with any part of guns in the wrong hands. Or a song that about the times we find ourselves living in and how things can change in an instant. Maybe a feel good song that points to how this world we live in could be changed for the better.

Thanks.

Here's my suggestions:

Broken Down World ~ Bill Deasy
Long Black Highway ~ Chris Knight
Autobiography of a Pistol ~ Ellis Paul

If It Were Up to Me
Words and Lyrics by Cheryl Wheeler

Maybe it's the movies, maybe it's the books
Maybe it's the bullets, maybe it's the real crooks
Maybe it's the drugs, maybe it's the parents
Maybe it's the colors everybody's wearin
Maybe it's the President, maybe it's the last one
Maybe it's the one before that, what he done
Maybe it's the high schools, maybe it's the teachers
Maybe it's the tattooed children in the bleachers
Maybe it's the Bible, maybe it's the lack
Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the crack
Maybe it's the hairdos, maybe it's the TV
Maybe it's the cigarettes, maybe it's the family
Maybe it's the fast food, maybe it's the news
Maybe it's divorce, maybe it's abuse
Maybe it's the lawyers, maybe it's the prisons
Maybe it's the Senators, maybe it's the system
Maybe it's the fathers, maybe it's the sons
Maybe it's the sisters, maybe it's the moms
Maybe it's the radio, maybe it's road rage
Maybe El Nino, or UV rays
Maybe it's the army, maybe it's the liquor
Maybe it's the papers, maybe the militia
Maybe it's the athletes, maybe it's the ads
Maybe it's the sports fans, maybe it's a fad
Maybe it's the magazines, maybe it's the internet
Maybe it's the lottery, maybe it's the immigrants
Maybe it's taxes, big business
Maybe it's the KKK and the skinheads
Maybe it's the communists, maybe it's the Catholics
Maybe it's the hippies, maybe it's the addicts
Maybe it's the art, maybe it's the sex
Maybe it's the homeless, maybe it's the banks
Maybe it's the clearcut, maybe it's the ozone
Maybe it's the chemicals, maybe it's the car phones
Maybe it's the fertilizer, maybe it's the nose rings
Maybe it's the end, but I know one thing.
If it were up to me, I'd take away the guns.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

JUDAS

by Antje Duvekot
Big Dream Boulevard
Black Wolf Records 2006

Judas Iscariot is kicking up seashells and he's cursing
He's being tortured by the roaring inside his mind
That won't surrender the scene
And even here alone in the dark
A thousand eyes are burning holes into his heart
Holes into his heart

Jesus, he was the schoolyard martyr
Was every mother's perfect son
Not like Judas in the back of the schoolbus
Invisible to everyone

There was lots of love in between Joseph and Mary
Joseph was the head coach at the high school
And they were living down on Judas's street
They'd be pitching Sundays in the grass when usually
Judas's father would be drunk off his ass

Jesus, he was the schoolyard martyr
Was every mother's perfect son
Not like Judas in the back of the schoolbus
Invisible to everyone

Last night Judas's father threw his son against the wall
That's how you learn to become invisible
And it may well have been any day like the rest
But the tape shows him moving
He is standing in the hall, he's never felt this alone before
He is walking through the door and it's springtime

Judas Iscariot is kicking up seashells and he is cursing
And if he stands here long enough
Maybe he will turn to stone and wash away
And he won't find the bullets
On that fated morning
And he will wake up from this dream

Jesus, he was the schoolyard martyr
Was every mother's perfect son
Not like Judas in the back of the schoolbus
Invisible to everyone
"...I implore you, I entreat you, I challenge you to speak with conviction, to say what you believe, in a manner that bespeaks the determination with which you believe it, because contrary to the wisdom of the bumper sticker, it is not enough these days to "question" authority, you have to speak with it, too."

Paradise, Once

by John Gorka
Between Five and Seven

These birds don't sing in the rain
They're waiting for the sun to shine
But I'm a man and a man-made thing
And I can sing out anytime

I can sing in the trees
I'll sing before the rivers rise
Maybe make you believe
That we were part of paradise
And could be part of paradise
'Cause we were part of paradise, once

I don't have any wings
But there are nights when I can fly
And I'll give you all my rings
Like I'm the oldest tree alive

But I can't stand like a tree
And you can cut me down to size
Even make me believe
That we were part of paradise
And could be part of paradise
'Cause we were part of paradise, once

Nothing ever gets lost
Just the pieces move around
I can't figure out the cost
I know that it will even out

Without feather or branch
Love brings you closer to the skies
It can give you back the chance
To be where it was paradise
To see a part of paradise
To be a part of paradise, once

Better Way

by Jeff Black
Tin Lily

I think this party's over
looks like everybody's leaving
there's a black car waiting but
I'm walking home this evening
all my friends are wondering
I'm just so god damned happy
sometimes my light shines so bright
you have to turn away
see I told you
I'd find a better way this time
see I told you
don't ever
underestimate the blind
see I told you
I bet you thought
I'd thrown it all away
It’s alright
f^^^ a bunch of
broken hearted
bullsh^^ man
I'm just getting started
slipped out the side door stealing
don't mean to get too heavy
I paid the toll I'm on a roll
and I'm on the bridge above the levee
way down deep inside we go
everybody wants to know but
it's you right now
I'm only about a mile away
waiting for the light to change

Thoughtless Behavior ~ John Gorka ~ Out of the Valley

I went off in the cruel word like a gun in a crowded room
I went off in the cruel word like a gun in a crowded room
It was through all these crude soldiers I learned to howl at the moon

I spread my seed like a farm boy, I shined my light like a lamp
I spread my seed like a farm boy, I shined my light like a lamp
I didn't know where I was going, no one was calling me champ

They didn't get what I was meaning, till I stopped meaning too much
They didn't get what I was meaning, till I stopped meaning too much
They didn't know that I was dreaming, till I was cold to the touch

You know I slept through the whole night, when I slept next to her
I said I slept through the whole night, when I slept next to her
I would have stayed there forever, 'cause no one knew who we were

I folded into her shoulder, I dreamed of missing a train
I folded into her shoulder, I dreamed of missing a train
Then all my thoughtless behavior brought me this way again
Soon all my thoughtless behavior brought me this way again

A singer/songwriter friend of ours, Alexinder Gunn, just wrote a song inspired by this incident.

It's called "Just a Gravestone"

I don't have the lyrics but you can hear the song with link

Thanks bluesboys......just heard Gunn's song. It's hauntingly beautiful.

Ellis has influenced this young artist, it's clear. He's got a photo on his website of a guitar that Ellis seems to have had his way with.

I Am
by Train

I never been on a railroad, as many times as they pass me by
I never crashed in the desert or seen a rodeo
I don't know much about the world wars or Vietnam
I've yet to read about Uncle Tom
Never climbed a real rock or seen Colorado

Am I the son I think I am
Am I the friend I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be - hey

I never had a day where money didn't get in my way
I never listened to much Elvis
I can't remember a warm December

Am I the son I think I am
Am I the friend I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be

I'm here for my sanity sanity
I am here for you
I'm here for your fantasy sanity, I am here
I am

Am I the son I think I am
Am I the father that I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be

I'm here for my sanity sanity I am here for you
Whether or not I'm walkin in
Or whether or not I'm walkin out
I'm always here for you

And I'm here for my sanity sanity
I am here for you
I'm here for my fantasy sanity, I am here
I am

The Other Side ~ David Gray

Meet me on the other side
Meet me on the other side
Ill see you on the other side
See you on the other side

Honey now if Im honest
I still dont know what love is
Another mirage folds into the haze of time recalled
And now the floodgates cannot hold
All my sorrow all my rage
A tear that falls on every page

Meet me on the other side
Meet me on the other side

Maybe I oughta mention
Was never my intention
To harm you or your kin
Are you so scared to look within
The ghosts are crawling on our skin
We may race and we may run
Well not undo what has been done
Or change the moment when its gone

Meet me on the other side
Meet me on the other side
Ill see you on the other side
Ill see you on the other side

I know it would be outrageous
To come on all courageous
And offer you my hand
To pull you up on to dry land
When all I got is sinking sand
The trick aint worth the time it buys
Im sick of hearing my own lies
And loves a raven when it flies

Meet me on the other side
Meet me on the other side
Ill see you on the other side

Honey now if Im honest
I still dont know what love is
