Joni Mitchell

Postby paddyinthepub » Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:09 am

I went looking for the Joni Mitchell thread to post a few words on an upcoming tribute album I learned of this morning. Only to find we had yet to start one. So here goes...and it's fitting since it's easy to see the thread running from Joni Mitchell to some of our favorites, including Ellis Paul.

News is Joni is working on a brand new record, her first in a long time. I can listen to almost all Joni's works, but like Ellis, I think Blue is a favorite.
I'm a bigger fan of her early stuff, but I'm sure I'll go back someday and give the "jazzier joni" another listen.

Have a favorite Joni Mitchell song, story, or record?

There's a tribute album coming soon:

Free Man In Paris - Sufjan Stevens
Boho Dance - Bjork
Dreamland - Caetano Veloso
Don't Interrupt The Sorrow - Brad Mehldau
For The Roses - Cassandra Wilson
Case Of You, A - Prince
Blue - Sarah McLachlan
Ladies Of The Canyon - Annie Lennox
Magdelana Laundries - Emmylou Harris
Edith And The Kingpin - Elvis Costello
Help Me - K.D. Lang
River - James Taylor

Folks,

You can hear 1-minute comparisons of the songs (i.e. Joni's version of "Blue" and Sarah McLachlan 's version of "Blue") here:

Becky, I'm sure you'll LOVE the Sufjan Stevens track. :)

Very cool! :) Although I just e-mailed the guy to let him know to add Lynn Miles' song "Last Night" (from her 1996 Slightly Haunted) where she references Joni's song "River":

And pretty soon we'll be singing Christmas songs
Like "I wish I had a river that I could skate away on"

Lynn actually swipes a bit of Joni's melody on that line too. :-)

In my local Starbucks over the weekend and there they advertised a special event to be held today (and likely Starbucks all over the land) which amounted to them spinning Joni Mitchell's new record for 3 hours non stop during lunch hours. Her new record, Shine, is out on Hear music, Starbuck's own record label. If you're thinking of going thru the drive thru at Starbucks during lunch hour today, and you're a fan of Ms. Mitchell, ya might want to pop inside instead for a first look at the first album Joni has done in ten years......I'm curious...I really am.... :D

I've yet to hear Joni's new one......put out by Starbucks. I read the other day that JT was going to release his next one on the Hear Music label as well.

Saw this today:

Herbie Hancock turns his piano genius to the songs of Joni Mitchell on River: The Joni Letters, and it's an all-star affair with Wayne Shorter, Norah Jones, Tina Turner, and Joni herself on board.

After seeing the trivia question this morning about Joni Mitchell, I decided to check out Joni's website...she has one, natch!!!!

Found out someone is compiling a list of songs "about Joni Mitchell" and figured it couldn't hurt to add Ellis Paul's song "JukeBox on my Grave" to that list. Here's the link to a page on her site where the songs are compiled.
