Chris Knight

Postby paddyinthepub » Mon Dec 04, 2006 10:36 pm

Been a fan of Chris Knight for years.
Reminds me of Robert Keen and Fred Eaglesmith.
He's been compared to Steve Earle and John Prine.
One writer said : "a more rural Bruce Springsteen circa Nebraska"

Saw him on CMT Studio 330 Sessions....here's a link:

Richard and Jela in the UK; Thomas in Germany, others across the pond:
Looks like Chris Knight will be in your neck of the woods and soon.
Looks like quite the tour schedule:
The details can be found on his site at : http://www.chrisknight.net

I cannot wait to see this guy in concert, but I'll have to for the time being. If any of you guys happen to be close by where he's playing...and attend the show....a few words out here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.......... 8)

Paddy - thanks and we have already got plans to see him when he comes over. We have seen him live once before, he was excellent and such an unassuming man. We chatted with him and he has the most distinct, I suppose I'd call it, appalachian, accent.

Recently heard a new song of his on the radio, think it was called something like 'my grandfather's land' and it was very moving.

We will try and post a report of the show.

Jela, thanks, somehow I knew you guys would be in the know. :D

The song about his grandfather's land is titled "Dirt" from "Enough Rope", and dang it I don't have it yet. Every review of the record I've read lately mentions the song...hope to hear it soon.

As to his Appalachian accent, I think you are spot on there. Not that I would know from Appalachian accents, but the 330 sessions interview segments I was listening to non stop a few weeks ago spoke volumes about where this guy is coming from. Sounds like the real deal to me.

I lyked tha waay he tawked...I really did.

And that's coming from me, a guy from Texas, who's been teased plenty my own self about the way I talk.

Jela, I am a bit green with envy knowing that Chris Knight will soon be playing concerts in your part of the world. I've been lurking over on his website and one thing stands out. His core fans seem a might rowdy bunch. It would appear they like to " Get Their Drink On ." It also seems that a concert doesn't go by without a fight breaking out and someone being "removed from the premises." His fans also seem to "sing along" to every song.

I mention this because I think Chris is going to appreciate the crowds he's likely to draw over there. That's to say, a "listening crowd." Imagine that??? I use to see Robert Keen all the time, when folks hung on every word, but didn't feel the need to sing along to every word of every song. Nowadays, a large part of Robert's fanbase are rowdy drunken college kids who look at his shows as a reason to "party!" It's much less a concert, more "a happening."

That would drive me nuts!!! I've seen too many videos on Youtube of Robert in concert and it's just hard to get past all the "drunken, off key, and out of tune" voices drowning him out.

Anyway, the reason I bring this up, again, is that Chris Knight is likely to put on quite a show for audiences ready to listen. He will probably really appreciate "The Quiet."

Enjoy the show Richard and Jela........

Photo(s) would be great too!!!

New CD: "The Trailer Tapes"

In the summer of 1996 inside a sweltering singlewide trailer outside a small Kentucky mining town, an unknown singer-songwriter named Chris Knight recorded an ‘unofficial’ batch of tracks prior to the release of his major label debut album. Over the next decade, through a combination of leaks, bootlegs and legend, those sessions would become something much more. “People have been talking about these tapes ever since I recorded them,” Chris Knight says. “To me, they were rough and stark and I never thought they’d see the light of day.” Ten years and four acclaimed albums later, The Trailer Tapes remain a remarkable moment in time less captured than cornered, a portrait of the artist as a ferociously talented young man. And for the artist The New York Times would soon call “the last of a dying breed…a hard-nosed iconoclast with an acoustic guitar and a college degree”, The Trailer Tapes have now arrived as the long-missing first chapter of one of the most uncompromising careers in music today.

Paddy, I know that Richard PM'd you on Friday but I also wanted to say thanks for the alert. It's such a shame as we were really looking forward to seeing him again. Unfortunately the London show isn't being rescheduled so we'll have to wait until another opportunity presents itself to see him.

Jela.....kind of you to say, gosh, I was all set to live vicariously.

Can't control weather can we? As a teen, I was all set to see Emmylou Harris play a concert in Houston. The cool part, it was a special concert where Emmylou and the band were to perform her newly released concept album "The Ballad of Sally Rose" in it's entirety. I loved that record.

I had long been a fan, and had never seen her perform. The weather in Houston was so bad with heavy rain and major street flooding, the promoters were forced to cancel the event, with no make-up show ever scheduled.

To this day, I have yet to see Emmylou in concert. Would have been nice to see her that night. Lots of folks in London surely share the sense that it's a shame the weather forced the cancellation of Chris' first stop on this trip across the pond.

I'm on the lookout for reports from the upcoming shows..... 8)

The options are endless....decide...decide...decide. :D

As stated earlier, I'm a big fan of Chris Knight's music BUT have yet to see him LIVE in concert. I have a few opportunities in the next several days to FINALLY see Chris Knight in person. Starting tonight!!!

He's also in NYC and Pittsburgh, both easily driven to from my neck of the woods. Arlington, Va. is likely the shortest distance, but I'd need to know some shortcuts to avoid Metro DC traffic.

He's on tour with a fellow by the name of Mando Saenz, a new name to me, whose Bio reveals that he's a Texas Troubador with some good tunes, a style all his own, and a fair amount of buzz with a recent invite to play a Folk Alliance showcase.

I'll let ya know how it all goes...til then.....here's a few dates:

4/3/07 8:00 PM Mando Saenz The Iota
with Chris Knight Arlington, VA
4/4/07 8:00 PM Mando Saenz The Turning Point
with Chris Knight Piermont, NY
4/5/07 8:00 PM Mando Saenz The Knitting Factory
with Chris Knight New York, NY
4/6/07 8:00 PM Mando Saenz The Thunderbird
with Chris Knight Pittsburgh, PA
4/7/07 8:00 PM Mando Saenz Uncle Pleasant's
with Chris Knight Louisville, KY
