EP "First day of Winter" Quiz - Dec. 21, 2006
Happy Winter folks!
To commemorate today being the first day of winter, I thought we'd have an EP winter quiz. I'm sure we've done this in the past, but not since we started the new board....plus I was able to find a few more lines of lyric to add to the list.
Your challenge is to name the title of the EP song (and one poem) in which the following lines of lyric appear. To make it more fun, let's each take TWO each.....and we'll see how we do collectively.
1. I think snowfall should be measured by how it takes a city by surprise.
2. It's New Year's Eve tonight in the city; they're tearing the chandeliers down.
3. The Johnsons brought us coffee for the cold.
4. Colder than the winter sun, I should warn you - better dress for it.
5. He's throwing light snowballs from the drifts in the yard.
6. The wind turned cold on the ferry.
7. December's outside creeping in.
8. It's a snowy night, the cops shut down the freeway.
9. It's a hobby I can count on; helps me forget about the cold.
10. I woke up to frost on the window.
11. Mezmerized as the windshield collides with the snow.
12. She is laying in flannel sheets.
13. There was a pocket of warmth near a jewelry store.
14. A cider house with frost on the eaves.
15. It was cold in the park.
16. With its cold moons making their weary rounds.
17. You're a candle when the streets grow cold.
18. The Williams rolled out cotton snow.
19. Stack your blankets, light your candles.
20. She said "You look lonely" and she swayed to Auld Lang Syne.
BONUS:
21. I walked her home on Winter Street, knowing boundaries were crossed.
C'mon all you EP Devotees....put those thinking caps on.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Jela,
Although I use the word "concoct" when speaking, I don't think I've ever seen it in print before. It looks quite weird.
Concoct. Concoct. Concoct.

Tis funny how that happens with the English language. I often come across words I've used all my life and stop and think " that looks weird".
For some reason...the word concoct is one I've used too and likely never had the need to spell. Only now it brings to mind cocktails.
Concoct a cocktail for me, won't you please. Which inevitably leads me straight to Don Con's song of which cocktails have possibly been concocted:
" Drink another round "
It's a curse I tell ya.

Great quiz Karen... though at 51 degrees here in New England it's not feeling much like winter yet... hooray...
Despite what's just hit Colorado - over 2 feet of snow in Denver and beyond, it's likely to be slush by Christmas Day. My wife informed this evening tht she heard a blip on the radio stating the following:
No White Christmas for anyone in the USA this year.
Off topic but worth noting.......

OK....here's a hint for the bonus #21. It's a song that has not been recorded....but was very much in rotation back in 2000.....think Kennedy Center performance....

# 8 and # 17
Merry Christmas Everyone!
# 8 is from Trolley Car
"It's a snowy night, the cops shut down the freeway
big men in plows are out carving up the streets
Below them, jammed on a subway,
I'm with two hundred over-dressed strangers
brushing snow off coats and shoulders
kicking snow off dress shoe feet"
#17 is from Did I Ever Know You?
"Do you know how you light up these buildings?
You can turn the head of a man whose grown old
You're a candle when the streets grow cold"

#4 is from the poem(song) Say Something
Carrie's a cold one, colder than the winter sun
I should warn you, you better dress for it
And I'm not the only one that thinks so
Beauty is skin deep, and yes, she is thick-skinned
But what's that for virtue?
While this was originally one of Ellis' poems...then set to music, I'm wondering, IS this the one poem? Or is there a poem yet to be guessed?

# 9 and # 12
# 9 is from King of Seventh Avenue
"I can count all the lights in the city from the ledge on the twenty- seventh floor.
There must be ten thousand window or more.
It's a hobby I can count on, helps me forget about the cold.
And I get to meet the neighbors for as long as the ledge will hold.
In the window across from me, a man is committing a robbery.
It's another form of the New York City lottery.
His ears must be burning, he drops the bag and he stares.
I'm the man out on the building.
Yes, there's no net down there...
And there's a woman below that I see.
Her silhouette is quite beautiful.
It plays tricks on my memory."
# 12 is from Just The Jester Fool
"So I say, "I, uh, like your wooden floor boards"
She is laying in flannel sheets
The brass bed speaks
Come on lie in me
And there I'm standing naked and meek, stalling She says lovingly... "

Chasing the child in winter
Her lips, they are chapped from the cold
He is throwing light snowballs from the drifts in the yard
They land at her feet in the snow
When the mother's gone...gone...
The love remains.

care, thanks for updating the list here today, it's nice to have it all together in one list.....save the bonus song. If i recall, Karen gave us a pretty good hint as to where to track down the unrecorded song. As you said, we have a wonderful search engine here on the forum, and with a few clicks one might be upon the thread that spoke about Ellis' performance at the Kennedy Center. It was at that show where the song is likely to be discovered. Karen said Ellis was performing it regularly back then.
Good luck all.
Good luck all.
