Labor Day Songs Quiz - Sept. 3, 2006

Postby KarenZ » Sun Sep 03, 2006 11:04 am

Good morning folks! It’s been mighty quiet this weekend so I hope this means you all are enjoying the Labor Day weekend here in the States. I hope our international friends are enjoying the weekend as well! :)

To celebrate Labor Day let’s test your knowledge of “working” songs. Below is a list of 20 “working” songs. The challenge is to match the song title with the songwriter who wrote it. The list could have been made up with nothing but Woody Guthrie songs!….but Woody is represented only once. To make it a little more interesting, I’m going to ask you all to reply with only one answer. Let’s see how long it takes 20 of you to come up with the remaining 20 correct matches after I start us off with the first one. :) Our list includes both very traditional as well as very contemporary songs.

1. Workingman’s Blues #2
2. Pittsburgh Town
3. Working Joe
4. Looking for a Job
5. Quecreek
6. Coal Miner’s Blues
7. Grand Central Station
8. Iron
9. Greatest Story Never Told
10. 9 to 5
11. Broke and Hungry
12. White Line Fever
13. A Working Man Can’t Get Nowhere Today
14. Coal Tatoo
15. 18 Wheels
16. U.S. Steel
17. Union Maid
18. Working Girl Blues
19. Working Stiff
20. Kenworth of My Dreams
21. White Freight Liner Blues

And the songwriters:

1. Sam Baker
2. Tom Russell
3. Pete Seeger
4. John McCutcheon
5. Ellis Paul
6. Mary Chapin Carpenter
7. Malvern Taylor (recently covered by Slaid Cleaves)
8. Buddy Miller
9. Joe Ely
10. The Carter Family
11. Todd Snider
12. Townes Van Zandt
13. Richard Shindell
14. Woody Guthrie
15. Merle Haggard
16. Stan Rogers
17. The Burns Sisters
18. Billy Ed Wheeler (recently covered by Red Molly)
19. Bob Dylan
20. Dolly Parton
21. Fred J. Eaglesmith

OK...I'll start us off by saying that Pete Seeger wrote "Pittsburgh Town". :)

There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Right.

I'll yield the field quickly.

Wendy, yay! You probably got the hardest one. ;)

OK....we've gotten 7 out of 20. That leaves 13. If anyone wants to try to match up the remaining 13, I'll mail them a used copy of Into the Wild as a prize. The only stipulation is that the winner must them promise to participate in the Book Club discussion beginning on Sept. 25! :)

Karen,
I think I have the answers for 5, but I doubt if I'll be able to get all 13! Hmmm....I'd really like a copy of that book. I need to re-read it and my copy of the book is up in Tulsa. Oh, well...I'm anxiously awaiting finding out all the answers to this quiz...it's a very good one for Labor Day!
