EP "win a guest pass" trivia - Aug. 30, 2006

Postby KarenZ » Wed Aug 30, 2006 11:58 am

“Traveling is not just seeing the new; it is also leaving behind. Not just opening doors; also closing them behind you, never to return. But the place you have left forever is always there for you to see whenever you shut your eyes. And the cities you see most clearly at night are the cities you have left and will never see again”
-- Jan Myrdal in The Silk Road, Random House, 1980.

Today we commemorate cities in Ellis Paul songs. To win an Ellis Paul Guest Pass for two, simply be the first person to reply with 20 Ellis Paul song titles containing the lines of lyric below. Replying implies that you have read and understood the rules of the contest.

1. You take a rickety plane from Seattle up into Anchorage.

2. They broke in Chicago, shaking the walls of every kid in the suburbs.

3. Chased the roads to Chicago.

4. And truth will march in Birmingham.

5. To escape into Hollywood’s hands.

6. Who would’ve thought New York could be such a small town.

7. Down in Houston on comes a woman with two kids and a bottle of booze.

8. Were married in a chapel in Vegas.

9. Dave’s a corporate lawyer in the city of Chicago.

10. It’s too cold in San Francisco Bay.

11. So you say your home is Boston?

12. A room with a view of Cambridge.

13. Last week I was visiting L.A.

14. In New York City they throw their wishes into wells.

15. It was on one of those hot Hollywood summer nights.

16. Marilyn Monroe bought a bungalow in sunny West Hollywood.

17. While Hollywood sleeps, a young man is dying.

18. It’s another form of the New York City lottery.

19. Now the Joneses from Poughkeepsie.

20. And I sat with a girl from Boston, playing cards for cigarettes.

Good Luck! :D

Sue Elen,

Why does I would bend the rules for you sound like an Ellis Paul line? ;)

#12 came to me easy enough.

#5 is still unanswered by me.

And...I don't wanna be no trubble maker here now.....but...I see a flaw in one of yer answers and may need a judge's rulin on it... :P

Jela,

You go girl! You even got the unrecorded #5 song. (Proving once again the need for an Ellis Paul Essensuals.) J Lo has nothing on you. ;)

I'll send you a confirmation e-mail this eveing. Thanks for participating! :)

Uh, the song of which you speak, Everything's Broken.

I know Tim O'Brien and Slaid Cleaves cover a song with the same title.

Don't think the lyrics clue for #5 above fits, so it must be Ellis' song?

Do tell, please.

Well, let's see if I can explain myself better.

Since the song Everything's Broken that I've heard Tim O'Brien and Slaid Cleaves do for years do not contain the lyrics to clue # 5 from the quiz above, ie. hollywood, can I assume that Ellis' song is new and one I've just not heard yet?

And If I haven't, why not? Has it been on myspace? Where have I been?

How was that?

And how did Jela get the ever obscure song # 5 when the rest of us were so clueless? Wait, let me guess, the answer is likely Richard. :P

I thought my statement "be the first person to reply with 20 Ellis Paul song titles" was pretty clear.....so....YES, it's an Ellis Paul song! :) "Everything's Broken" was in heavy rotation a few years back so lots of folks know it from live shows. We've talked about it here on the board many times. And you can hear it on the Kennedy Center archived broadcast from June 1999 linked below. It's the second song in the 1-hour show. A really really really terrific song. Did I say it was terrific? :)

Kennedy Center set list:
Changing Your Name
Everything’s Broken
The World Ain’t Slowing Down
Maria’s Beautiful Mess
3,000 Miles
Weightless
Angel in Manhattan
[poem] Tornado Girl
Rainy Season
Did Galileo Pray?

Color me clueless...... I just don't remember this song at all.

And yer right, I barked up the wrong tree since you stated clearly they were Ellis songs.

Mea culpa. :?

Sorry if I kept ya up a lil longer tonight with this Irish Inquisition but hey I got an Ellis Concert from Kennedy Center in 1999 out the deal so I must be doing something right. :P

Thanks, as always, for all you do out here in Ellisville for us, as well as ALL the extra lil things you do for me.

I appreciate it. :D

Paddy - it wasn't Richard who identified No5 for me - he wasn't even around when I was doing the quiz!!!!

I must admit that it had me stumped for a while but then I typed the lyric into www.ask.com search engine and it led me to http://charlie.angstrom.net/~lmurdock/ep/every.htm
which gave me the answer!

I beavered away all on my lonesome for the answers, didn't look at earlier posts except to check whether there had already been a winner before I posted my responses. It was fun and look forward to similar quizzes at a future date, although I'm now embargoed from winning for the next 6 months.

Jela,

I was just razzin a bit about Richard having answered #5. I knew it was you that knew. There was a post a while back that Richard had answered and someone responded to it by addressing it to Jela since we are so used to your posts and not so much Richard's.

All in good fun, really.

Congrats on the victory.....nice find on Everything's Broken.

Paddy - I know you were just pulling my leg!

It's funny but Richard can get a song just by hearing the first instrumental note whereas I have to wait until the singer starts and hear a lyric before I know the song.

His musical knowledge is vastly superior to mine and I remember once when we were on holiday in the States and met a guy involved in the music industry who thought that Richard was a music journalist because he knew so much! Perhaps in another life???

Hey, Richard and Jela, remember Name That Tune, a popular American television show back in the day?

Some clues were given - then contestants would challenge each other with the number of notes it would take them to Name That Tune.

Your words on Richard's music knowledge brought that back to mind. Ah, yes, a life in music journalism, that would be sweet.
