Food Finds in Song Lyrics

Postby paddyinthepub » Wed Aug 16, 2006 11:12 pm

Food Glorious Food....it was once one of my son's favorite songs from Oliver, the Motion Picture about young Oliver Twist.

There's far more food in song lyrics than you think. I pondered it a bit today and several songs came to mind. Try it, you'll see.

In honor of Harry Chapin, a voice in the fight against hunger on a much larger scale....... I'll submit this one:

30,000 Pounds Of Bananas.......Harry Chapin

So it's a fun look at foods found in songs.

Dig in.

Okay, been struggling with the rewrite of this topic's subject name. I think this one works at letting one know what's on the plate.

Not a huge fan of chain restaurants, but they'll do in a pinch. Good restaurants are always fun to track down when you first move to a new area. If yer lucky, you've landed in an area of town full of good ones. Otherwise, you drive further for dinner. And we do........

If we have to, chain restaurants will do. A new one just opened near our house. Never heard of it before. Well, that's not exactly true.

It's a chain based on Jimmy Buffet's songs and lifestyle. Heard of it? Can you guess the name of the place? Should be easy, depending on your age.

It's also the title of a great song by Jimmy Buffett. Got it yet?

Cheeseburger In Paradise

The song and the food are mighty tasty..... :D

I ate at the Cheeseburger in Paradise in Honolulu. It was a fitting name, since I had a cheeseburger and I was in Paradise. :D

Songs with food?

Lime in the Coconut ~ Harry Nillsson (a favorite of my Dad's when I was a kid)

Red Red Wine ~ Neil Diamond (the jewish Elvis)

...and on SONGS FOR KIDS LIKE US there are four more songs about food, or that reference food:

No! No! No!
Chicken Lips
Professor Schnoodle
Resolution Song

Sorry, I'm stuck in kiddie land because my five year old listens to these songs incessantly; until now I hadn't realized they all reference food.

Leave it to a Texan and they are gonna talk about food...good food...likely Mexican Food...good Mexican Food. It's Robert Keen singin a song about the front porch he used to share with his one time Texas A&M University college roommate Lyle Lovett.

The Front Porch Song....by Robert Keen And Lyle Lovett

This old porch is a big ol' red and white Herford bull
Standin' under a mesquite tree in Agua Dulce, Texas
He keeps on playin' hide and seek with that hot august sun
Sweatin' and a pantin' cause his work is never done
Oh no, with those cows and a red top cane

This old porch is a steamin' greasy plate of enchiladas
With lots of cheese and onions ans a guacamole salad
You can get them at the LaSalle Hotel in old downtown
With ice tea and a waitress who will smile every time
Oh yeah, I left a quarter tip on my ten dollar bill

This old porch is a palace walk in on a main street in Texas
It ain't never seen or heard the days of G's and R's and X's
And that '62 poster that's almost faded down
And a screen without a picture since Giant came to town
Oh no, I like those junior mints and the red hots too, yes I do

This old porch is like a weathered grey haired seventy years of Texas
Who’s doin' all he can not to give in to the city
And he always takes my rent late so long as I run his cattle
He picks me up at dinner time and I listen to him rattle

He says the Brazos still runs muddy like she's run all along
There’s never been no cane to grind and the cotton's all but gone
You know this Chevrolet pickup truck, hell she was somethin' back in '60
But now there won't nobody listen to him 'cause they all think he's crazy

This old porch is just a long time of waiting and forgetting
Remembering the coming back and not crying about the leaving
And remembering the falling down and the laughter of the curse of luck
From all those son's of bitches who said we'd never get back up

This old porch is a big old red and white Herford bull
Standing under a mesquite tree out in Agua Dulce
He keep's on playing hide and seek with that hot August sun
He’s sweating and a panting 'cause his work is never done
I've know a whole lot of bulls in my time, and there work is never done.

The Perpetual Groove version of Tupelo Honey is pretty good!

Paddy= your first post made me think of the original Sabrina, when Sabrina and Linus are on the boat singing, "We have no bananas today."

On Top of Spaghetti is by far my favorite song about food. Yeah, I work with little kids.

KarenZ - and - care -

Sorry for the confusion y'day about the Alice's Restaurant post. While it may have looked as tho I was pointing out a misplacement of the post, I wasn't thinking that at all. It actually looked like a thread that could have stood pretty well on it's own.

My only concerns were this: When care posted it under it's own topic it was somehow duplicated..that is...under "Say Something" you would see our topic of FOOD FINDS in SONG LYRICS. All that food in there.

Care actually starteds a new topic called : food?

And that was fine...because it was about gettin anything you wanted, not having to stay tied to food at all. It could a been a fun thread I'm sure.
I mean, imagine going into a thread or place like Alice's and being able to get " anything " you want.

So, my only concern and follow up ask for help was that it posted the topic and post twice...2x...more than once.....allowing folks to post in either thread they wanted.

food?

or

food?

Figured "care" could delete on of em and we'd be good to go on the one that was left.

Kapish?

I know I've overexplained this a bit, but that's what happened.

Artist: Lyle Lovett
Song: Nobody Knows Me

And I like cream in my coffee
And I like to sleep late on Sunday
And nobody knows me like my baby
And I like eggs over easy
With flour tortillas
And nobody knows me like my baby

And nobody holds me
And nobody knows me
Nobody knows me like my baby

But it was a dream made to order
South of the border
And nobody knows me like my baby
And she cried man how could you do it
And I swore that there weren't nothing to it
But nobody knows me like my baby

And nobody holds me
And nobody knows me
Nobody knows me like my baby

And I like cream in my coffee
And I hate to be alone on Sunday
And nobody knows me like my baby

God Bless Texas

And we have Judy Collins doing "Cook with Honey". And Lyle Lovett does love his food. In "Church" he can't wait for the service to end so he can get to those "beans and good cornbread."

He recorded it for a kids' benefit CD. For The Kids Too. I bet your kids would love it. It's got Rainbow Connection by Jason Mraz and a bunch of original kid friendly songs by current artists.

Paddy - thank you for bringing my peeps, PP&M, into this thread - it has been too, too long since I last head of them here!

Bonnie & Sue Ellen - I have a copy of the 1st For the Kids album, and there's a copy of Sarah McLaughlin singing Rainbow Connection that just grabs your heart. And Guster singing Got To Be Clean, which is great, and Bare Naked Ladies with the La La La Song (a particular favorite of mine, given my childhood nickname of Lala...)

Now I have to go dig it out and listen to it!

Lauren, it's my pleasure. I once had a rather impressive 8-track collection and I'd listen to Peter, Paul and Mary via the best of record they had out with Ten Years in the title. I loved their sound and those songs.

Reading Ellis recommends earlier today and saw evidence that Ellis and I think a little along the same lines when it comes to our favorite John Gorka record. It's John's second release Land Of The Bottom Line.

From that record, the song Prom Night In Pigtown has more food in it than I could ever possibly eat in my lifetime.

From John's first record... I Know....his song Winter Cows ends with the observation that dairy cows don't have it so bad. You'll hear John wax poetic that "cold milk in a bottle still beats frozen food".

Texas Cookin by Guy Clark

I'm going down to Austin, Texas
I'm going down to save my soul
Get that bar-b-que and chili
Eat my fill then come back home
I'm gonna take my baby with me
We gonna have a high ol' time
We gonna eat till we get silly
Sho' do make a beer taste fine

Chorus
Oh my, momma ain't that Texas Cookin' something
Oh my, momma it'll stop yo' belly and backbone bumpin'
Oh my, momma ain't that Texas Cookin' good
Oh my, momma eat it everyday if I could

I know a man that cook armadillo
tastes so sweet he calls it pie
I know a woman makes pan dulce
tastes so good it gets you high

Get them enchiladas greasy
get them steaks chicken fried
Sho' do make a man feel happy
to see white gravy on the side

Chorus

I know a place that got fried okra
beat anything I ever saw
I know a man that cook cabrito
it must be against the law

We gonna get a big ol' sausage
a big ol' plate of ranch style beans
I could eat the heart of Texas
we gonna need some brand new jeans

Chorus

It's got to be 5 o'clock somewhere.

Here's Sangria Wine by Jerry Jeff Walker

When friends come for Saturday night
It's nice to make up some Sangria wine
It's organic and it comes from the vine
It's also legal and it gets you so high
Yeah I love that Sangria wine
When I'm drinking with old friends of mine
Yeah I love that Sangria wine
When I'm drinking with old friends of mine
CHORUS:
Whoa oh oh Woah oh oh I love Sangria wine
Whoa oh oh Woah oh oh I love Sangria wine
Start with some wine
Get some apples and brandy and sugar just fine
Old friends always show up on time
That's why you add Sparkling Burgandy wine
CHORUS
In Texas on a Saturday night
Everclear is added to the wine sometimes
Some nachos, burritos and tacos
Who knows how it usually goes, it goes
CHORUS
Yeah I love that Sangria wine
Just like I love old friends of mine
They tell the truth when they're mixed with the wine
That's why I blend in the lemons and limes

People My Age ~ John Gorka ~ The Company You Keep

People my age
Have started looking gross
Maybe not in Colorado
Or up the Silicon Coast
Back in Pennsylvania
I'd eat scrapple on toast
Those were my first steps
On the road to looking gross

This food used to be a mystery to me. No longer. John's lyrics on another of his earlier songs " Prom Night In Pigtown" had me wonderin for years.

Then along comes another song by John with scrapple in it. What's in scrapple, anyway? Don't ask. The less you know.....

Anyhoo, Finally tried it this year - it must be a Pennsylvania thing - at a diner and at the suggestion of a friend - from Pennsylvania - that it was great and I'd love it.

At least I can say I've tried it!!!

If you've ever been in the audience for John Gorka's song titled ' The Body Parts Medley' .....then you know it's another food find...... :D

Boston Baked Beans
Burnt Burrito
Beer

Never recorded....seldom played live......no wait.....it's recorded I think on his Artist Profile's vhs release from a live concert.

Fun stuff.
