Today (Aug. 18) in EP Music History Trivia

Postby KarenZ » Fri Aug 18, 2006 9:08 am

"In a broken school bus they found him
In the heart of the Alaska range
The journey ends when the heart stops beating…time is so fleeting
-- Ellis Paul in "The Ballad of Chris McCandless"

Most of you know that Ellis Paul wrote "The Ballad of Chris McCandless" after reading Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild. You may not know, however, that Chris McCandless' story first appeared as the magazine article Death of an Innocent written by Krakauer and published in January 1993 in Outside Magazine. It's an absolutely captivating article. In the article, Krakauer speculates that Chris McCandless died in the wilds of Alaska on Aug. 18, 1992. Read the story at the link below.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Thank you Karen, after reading "Into the Wild" I meant to look up the original article and haven't been able to get to it. Just what I need, my own personal librarian!

Thanks Karen for the link - excellent article. I read that when it was first published it resulted in the largest postbag the magazine had ever received with writers split between being supportive of CM and very critical of him.

It will be interesting to see the film when it comes out, Sean Penn acquired the film rights and is directing/producing it. I wonder what angle it will take - will CM be a hero or a villain for causing his family so much heartache?

If anyone hasn't read Into the Wild, I'll send a used copy to the first person who replies to this post with the words:

Ellis Paul is an incredible songwriter!

It doesn't have to be written in a red font, but you MUST include an exclamation point.

Here is some info. about the film....who do we write to about getting "THE SONG" into the movie??

Sean Penn Filming 'Into the Wild' in Alaska
August 01, 2006
A film crew was scheduled to wrap up scenes in Denali National Park Monday for Sean Penn's movie about a young man's doomed Alaska journey. "Into the Wild" is based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book of the same name.

The shoot in the park is focused on Christopher McCandless' last days before he died in 1992, said Aurora Belchic, a Paramount spokeswoman.

Filmmakers will make another trip to Alaska in late August, she said. That four-day shoot will take place at an undisclosed site. Paramount would not release any more details.

The book empathized with McCandless, portraying him as a free-spirited adventurer. Many Alaskans, however, were scornful of McCandless' hike into unfamiliar territory with little food and no compass or map.

McCandless is being played by Emile Hirsch, who starred in "Lords of Dogtown" and "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys." Other cast members include Oscar winners William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden as McCandless' parents, along with Catherine Keener and Vince Vaughn.

Prolly countless funny stories about how a song made it's way into a movie or onto a soundtrack. Personally, I would find it hard to believe Sean Penn was unaware of Ellis' song Ballad of Chris McCandless.

What movie makers usually do, and do well, is their homework. They simply have to know about this song, wouldn't ya think? So let's say for the sake.....they don't. How then, shall we go about, ahem, suggestin it.

You might save yourself some time and just start with Kevin Bacon. Why?

Kevin worked with Sean's brother Chris Penn on Footloose. Sean and Chris' brother Michael Penn is a singer songwriter. Kevin and his brother are The Bacon Bros., a musical duo. Out of all these folks there's got to be one of them has heard BOCM and passed it on to someone near this movie set.

Then we could always use the Cher connection........

Good luck with this one Ellis. I totally see this song being in this movie.

By the way, on a sadder note, Sean's Brother Chris Penn passed away recently. I have experienced the loss of a brother. Taint right. Thinkin Alaska would have been a good place to go. To ponder it all.
