Folks,
The show in Evanston, IL this past weekend was stellar. My kind of show: all-Ellis, all-the-time. (No opener and no band.)
And what a show it was! Nice and LONG! 22 songs! (Counting one verse of a new children's song.)
The setlist:
rose tattoo
the only way
lights of vegas
3000 miles
dragonfly
once upon a summertime (piano)
the heckler
maria's beautiful mess
annalee (unplugged in the audience)
hurricane angel (piano)
sweet mistakes
speed of trees
claendar man
take all the sky you need
alice's champagne palace
she was
love is a curious thing
Ben Franklin (one verse)
cotton's burning (mine and IllinoisBill's request!)
heaven is where you are (piano)
the world ain't slowing down
Encore:
A 5-minute stream of consciousness about Chicago/Lincoln/Wrigley Field/WhiteSox, etc Amazing!
At about the point he did "sweet mistakes" was when he started asking for requests. Folks shouted out requests for "Paris in a day" and "look at the wind blow" and "angel in Manhattan" and "weightless" and many, many others - all seemingly older material. I suspect EP woudl prefer to have requests for newer material - if for no other reason than because he probably remembers how to play the newer stuff more easily - but, honestly, I think the fact that folks continue to ask for older stuff is a tribute to those songs' greatness. It's a compliment, IMHO.
It was so nice seeing Dean and Elaine!
Pictures fortchoming! Gimme another day or two!

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
