Superstitions

Postby paddyinthepub » Fri Mar 13, 2009 9:22 am

Friday the 13th today....yikes!!!

You guys supertsitious?

I am not....though it does give pause. Cruising the streets of Houston as a teen a good friend starting to do something I'd never seen or heard before.....if he saw a car with one broke headlight he'd lick his index finger briefly. Kind of like a score one tally....real quick. I asked him what the heck he was licking his finger for and he said something like "one eye" -- I said "one eye? -- what the hec's a one-eye?"

It's a one eyed car he said -- one of the headlights is out and you have to lick your finger or it's bad luck for you. I didn't buy it. But damned if i didn't start licking my damn index finger for years after whenever i saw a damn one eyed car. Can't be taking any chances, right? :P

So, do you guys have any superstitions....and remedies you'd like to share here?

Superstition
by Stevie Wonder

Very superstitious, writings on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin strong,
You dont wanna save me, sad is my song.

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way, yeh, yeh.

Very superstitious, nothin more to say,
Very superstitious, the devils on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way, no, no, no

I am not superstitious at all. My mother-in-law's lucky number is 13 and she's going out to play Keno tonight. Guarantee she wins something!

Very funny about the headlight thing. My son touches the roof of the car when he sees what we call "pediddles" around these parts for some reason!

I'm lucky
I'm lucky
I can walk under ladders
Yes I'm so lucky
That I'm as lucky
As me

Struck it rich
Dirty rich
No work
And get richer
And the world
Loves a winner
Yes I'm so happy
That you're happy
With me

You are happy too
Ain't you baby

Numero uno
Living for
Right now
And it's
L-I-V-I-N-G
When I'm here
With you

I'm lucky
I'm lucky
I don't need a bracelet
No salt
For my shoulder
I don't own a rabbit
No clover
No heather
No wonder
I'm lucky

Yep, Pediddle is one headlight! I am going to share your story with my son and I betcha he adds that to his ritual!

Funny thing is, he smashed one of his headlights last week, ahem, hitting a stone wall pulling into someone's driveway, and I asked him if he was driving around touching his ceiling the whole time! Silly of me to think that ...... how would he text while driving?

Kids, I tell ya. They all conspire to age their parents long before their parents are ready to age!!!!

No kidding! I only use speaker phone when I'm in the car and don't even like doing that.

I had texting for one month on my phone and got rid of it. I can't stand it. I type for a living, why do I want to type on a tiny little phone? I am so uncool! :D

Now that I finished reading, I need to look up "punch buggy." We used to play that when I was a kid. Whenever you saw a Volkswagon Bug, you punched the nearest person. Didn't know you could do that for a paddidle!

Waking Up To Me

It’s a long cold, cold night
It’s three in the morning and I’m drivin’
With one broken head light
On the radio storm warnings
And I’m callin’ just to tell you
But you will not believe
That come sunrise
When your eyes are wide open
You’ll be waking up to me
Hee-ee-ee

I sat at the table one last shot
Threw it back and weighed the options
Got an ache in me, an aching to drive back
Snowing clear to Virginia
And I’m calling just to tell you
But you will not believe
That I’d drive all night
Half across this country
So you could wrap your arms around me
Hee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee

We found a lovely cape cod style house to rent in Penn Hills when we first moved to Pittsburgh. Built in 1943 and newly renovated. We loved it. Didn't bother us in the least that when we turned off Frankstown Rd. into the neighborhood there was a small cemetery right there.

The first time our niece and nephew (ages 6 and 4 then) visited from Ohio we were out on the town one night and returning home we pulled into the neighborhood and all of a sudden I hear gasps from the back seat. What's going on back there?, I asked. They didn't utter a sound or for that matter breathe.

You see, they had this superstition that any time you pass a cemetary, you have to HOLD YOUR BREATH!!!

I'd never heard of that one!!!

Yup, heard of them, live them, padidill and all :)
and then some...

How about "owe me a coke, 1,2,3....." when you say the same thing at the same time as someone else... you are suppose to touch the person to get them to stop and then that is how many cokes you owe them.. that was fine as a kid, but what a mouthful now to say "owe me a caffine free diet coke!!" :P

My birthday is the 13th so every few years it is a Friday, those were usually the most fun

In my younger days I had to do the math when a hand mirror fell off of a counter and shattered into a million pieces. I remember thinking "oh great" I got seven years of bad luck to watch out for!!!
