December Fun!
As we are now on countdown towards Christmas and New Year, I thought that it would be fun to set up a rolling question, to last through the month. The idea is that I'll post first and then the person who answers, posts the next and so on. Let's see if we can keep it going until the 31st December.
The questions can be anything to do with the holiday season and you can pose a specific quiz type question or seek preferences. Here goes......
In Tchiakovsky’s ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ who is the Nutcraker’s main enemy?

Another fun one... thanks Jela!
The Rat King is the Nutcracker's main enemy, I think...
Next question:
What's the occupation of the elf who befriends Rudolf (in the old TV cartoon show)?
extra credit: what is the elf's name?

Do we assume the answers given are correct unless the person who posed the question says otherwise?

Hint: Not a big favorite with the kids as they are functional rather than fun.

You guys and gals are cracking me up...
And where do you get these questions? I'm afraid to guess an answer for fear I will have to come up with an extremely thought-provoking question and it's making my head hurt just think about that!
Love you guys and gals.

Re: December Fun!
Folks,
I'm glad you're having fun, but I *think* what Jela intended (correct me if I'm wrong Jela) is that if you KNOW an answer you reply and toss out another question. That way it's like a game of tag.
So....if someone knows the most common gift exchanged at Hanukkah, please let us know! (Wikipedia didn't help me.)

Re: December Fun!
Bonnie - this is my guess and I'll probably be showing my ignorance here but as the festival is to do with lights are candles the answer????
....but thinking about it, I suppose you wouldn't neccessarily give candles to children though???
Still, candles are my best guess.
Karen, you're right in terms of the 'rules' but I 'spect that there will be questions posed that create some debate and it's fun to see what people sometimes come up with. I hope that no-one is going to be put off by the thought that they need to post a question, after the have answered the previous one correctly as the question can be about anything at all related to the holiday season.

Bonnie,
OMG!!! What a memory I possess!!!
I think I learned about the socks from you here on the forum from holiday's past....
It occured to me last night there might have been some envy going on when the 12 days of Christmas was written. Was it an attempt to outdo the 8 nights of the Menora? Not sure there's anything to that. But that's not my question. Let's see, I said I'd have a doozy! Patti's is a good one, the folk singer in a cartoon.
I'm going to keep it simple, and not pose a new one, til we get this one answered.
I know Burl Ive's might be the voice of that cartoon....
Hmmn......is it, Pete Seeger singing "If I Had a Hammer"
That's my best recollection.......I can almost picture the folk singer now in that toon!!!
Big fun, guys and gals......have a great day!

wow.....
I'm thinking game show!!!
Okay, here goes:
Ellis' story around the holidays involves his family's tradition of shopping and xmas tree hunting on Black Friday. Now, I have no idea why a song popped into my head here, (actually I do) but it did.
Name the band that had quite the career in the 70's, 80's and 90's.....that had a song with the line:
When Black Friday Comes...........
Good luck, all!

Re: December Fun!
Way to go, Karen!!!
I went to google, too, to make sure I had the lyric right. For some reason it seemed odd that Steely Dan would have a song about the day after Thanksgiving and going shopping. Sure enough, xmas plays no part in the song. It's more along the lines of the economy and stock market downturn. Appropos!
Coincidentally, Karen, a good friend of my wife's just went to a special screening of "It's a Wonderful Life" in Cleveland, Ohio, and got to meet and take a picture with the woman who played the little girl in the movie.
I've lost her name in the movie and in real life, but thought that was cool!
I can only come up with one name right now, so I'll let whoever has both actors in mind answer this one!

Okay... I have it...
Just to continue the running theme, AND NO Googling or IMDB'ing for the answer!
Last night I watched the holiday classic "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with my kids... You know, the one with Burger Meister Meister-Burger...
Two very well known old-school celebrity entertainers provided the voices for the narrator (the Mail Man) and for Chris Kringle (Santa)... Who were the voice actors in Santa Claus is Coming to Town?

Re: December Fun!
Patti - since you jumped in here with a question that is on a similar theme '12 days of Christmas' to the one I was going to ask next I have the answer but only because my Advent Calendar this year is a '12 days of Christmas' themed one:
2 Turtle Doves
3 French Hens
4 Calling Birds
5 Gold Rings
6 Geese-a-laying
7 Swans a-swimming
8 Maids a-milking
9 Ladies dancing
10 Lords a-leaping
11 Pipers piping
12 Drummers drumming
So my question to the board is - what item/feature did your Advent Calendar reveal today?

Now ordinarily I'd say 8 candles but that would be the obvious answer........
Is it nine candles.....one used to the light the other 8 candles of the menora?

Re: December Fun!
I'll toss out the next question and just say: Patti, you owe me one!!!
Door to door caroling seems to be on the decline....a lost art if you will.
My question is a 3-parter and revolves around caroling.......Did you ever go out and sing door to door?
Do kids still stop by and sing for you? Is there a community event that helps you bring in the holidays?
We did go door to door as kids......and based on my singing voice today, my neighbors are lucky I stopped!
Our neighboorhood goes all out for Christmas.....it's a beautiful thing. Lights and wreaths and such. To top it off on Christmas Eve everyone lights tea candles inside sand bag luminaries and lines the sidewalks in front of their homes with them. It's a beautiful thing, I'm told. One year I'll stay home for the holidays and see for myself. Our neighbors cover for us and set them out for us..... lest we look like The Three Scrooges!!!

thanks Paddy
I go to a friends Christmas party annually and she hires a 3 piece band, a french horn, a trumpet and flute to play on her front lawn for a while and people go outside and join them, it is very entertaining.. A few little girls on my street (Lindsay included) have gone around and sang caroles for the neighbors.. and Lindsay just told me her classs is going to go around and sing to other classes at her school.(the singers will be outside and the classrooms will open their windows)
We will put our tree up next weekend.. and we don't put presents under it until a day or two before. Until then I put our favorite Christmas story books under the tree and read one every night before going to bed.. most of the books are little Golden Books and very quick reads... My girls still like to do this even though they are "much" older now They each have their favorite and my favorite book is one I had as a kid too,... Santa Mouse...
So my question is do you have a favorite Christmas story or book that you pull out every year?
An inch or 2 of snow this morning is helping to get in the Christmas mood ...

Patti - I love the idea of books under the tree - I don't have a favourite Christmas book or story but in the book group I belong to we always try to pick a read for December that has a Christmas theme.
One year we read 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' as we wanted to read a children's book and it was around the time that the 'Narnia' film came out. Last year it was Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' and this year it's a ghost story ' The Woman in Black'
Speaking of ghosts, Question: What the name of Scrooge's former business partner who appears in 'A Christmas Carol' as a ghost?

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
