Ellis Paul Crossword Puzzle!

Postby KarenZ » Wed May 14, 2008 11:40 am

Howdy folks,

Thought I'd toss something different your way this morning. Here's a crossword puzzle based on Ellis Paul songs and lyrics for your enjoyment. Please do share how you fare on the answers and/or other comments. :)

(I tried to figure out how to determine a "winner" without success. Any ideas out there?) :?

Ellis Paul Crossword Puzzle

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Maybe you all can "discuss" some of the answers before looking at the answer key. ;)

I used to pride myself on crossword sleuth worthiness and am less so today.....BUT.....I will try and help out here. I have yet to sit down with the puzzle but do see that 4 down has 6 letters and an unbelievably difficult clue. I do not recall that lyric at all.....must be obscure. :?

Do you have the 2nd letter?

amazin how it helps jog the ol' memory..... :D

Paddy,
You might be right! I do have the 2nd letter, and I show that it should be an "i" so mirror would fit. I feel like I'm so close to remembering what song it's from, but it's still just not coming.

Becky, Paddy,

The only clue I'm giving is to say that the song is very OLD. ;)

All I can venture to guess is that's it's from a song on Carnival of Voices. I think the line (if it's correct) about a mimicking mirror would be the mirrors found at any number of carnivals but especially the one on the album cover that looks like it's along the eastern seaboard.....NJ, maybe.

Anyway...the title track so to speak for Carnival of Voices.....

with these lyrics somewhere in the song.

tried to frame my own self portrait
my id and my ego
i'm a carnival of voices

The song is half spoken and half sung I think.
So, maybe from the song......Self Portrait

I didn't get a chance to attack the crossword yesterday, but plan on doing so this afternoon.

Paddy, I so hear you about if the music was playing, you'd know all of the words!

Reminds me of when I was a kid and my mother asking me why I knew all of the words to Don McLean's American Pie but couldn't memorize school stuff. I told her they should put school work to music and we'd all be brilliant! Still believe that to this day! Taught my son how to spell his name when he was 3 in a sing-song kinda way. Every so often he brings that little tune up!

Good luck crossword-ing. I'm sure I'll be needing some help too!

What a coincidence!

Turned on the radio player at the front page here and on came the first song that, coincidentally enough, contained one of the lyrics in the crossword.

Course, it was one I already had, so no help there.

But it might help some of you. :D

I was out of the house and away from my CD's most of the day... except for my new CD (previously owned on cassette) of Urban Folk Songs. (another Mother's Day present :)

I did not catch any answers from that CD, that I could hear. So I was wondering Miss KZ if it is not too much trouble if you might give a hint to the number of times each CD was referenced for answer. EX... Songs from Speed of Trees hold 5 answers....
It is mostly the down clues that have me stumped though I did figure out another answer earlier today and if it is correct it is from an EP song, but on a compilation CD,not one of his own. AND I think a couple of the answers are from new not yet recorded songs, but if you look through the DB posts you will find some of them.. OR you can just go to the answer page :)

Folks,

I must confess that several of the brand new (and still unrecorded) songs that EP's been performing the last few months are represented here.....the lyrics to which are all transcribed in the Breaking Through The Radio forum..... ;)

Time for a morning walk......later 'gators.... :)

Without listening or looking at lyrics last night I got three more answers.. They just popped in my head :). I know I have 4 answers left to find.. 2 of them are across and 2 of them are down.. and I knew the ones I don;t know are from some new songs!! Don't think I will have my computer fixed before I go away for a few days next week...but might check the answer sheet before I leave!!

Well 26 across was one of the first clues I got but I have to say I'm struggling with lots. I often know which song the clue relates to but without the music I can't get the missing word...........will keep on trying.

Patti - well done to you!

OK, I gave up at some point this weekend and checked the solutions.... now I'm trying to put song(or poem) titles to each of the clues and am having almost as much trouble! :?

Karen, what a GREAT puzzle you made! I really enjoy puzzles that can be spun out for many days and solved in many ways 8)
