"Now she puts on some music,
She asks you to choose it
You sang her back a Gershwin line." -- Ellis Paul in "Maria's Beautiful Mess"

It was on this date in 1928 that George Gershwin's symphonic composition An American in Paris premiered at Carnegie Hall in NYC with Walter Damrosch conducting the New York Philharmonic. Inspired by time Gershwin had spent in Paris, it is in the form of an extended tone poem evoking the sights and energy of the French capital in the 1920s. Gershwin collaborated on the original program notes with the critic and composer Deems Taylor, noting that: "My purpose here is to portray the impression of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city and listens to various street noises and absorbs the French atmosphere."

In 1951 it was made into a movie starring Gene Kelly. In a scene from the movie linked below you can watch a video of Gene Kelly singing and dancing with a group of French children to Gershwin's "I got rhythm". Fun.....and very sweet. :)

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
