Today (Dec. 7) in EP Music History Trivia (win a prize!)

Postby KarenZ » Thu Dec 07, 2006 10:09 am

Folks,

Happy Birthday to Tom Waits born in Pomona, California on Dec. 7, 1949. (He's 6 days younger than me!) :)

Tom Waits has been covered by Johnny Cash (Down There By the Train), Mary Chapin Carpenter (Downtown Train), Shawn Colvin (The Heart of Saturday Night), Elvis Costello (More than Rain), The Eagles (Ol' 55) and (On the Border), Nanci Griffith (San Diego Serenade), Bette Midler (Shiver Me Timbers), Bruce Springsteen (Jersey Girl) and many others.

On his 1985 release Rain Dogs, pictured above, Waits recorded a song with the same title as an Ellis Paul song. Waits' song was covered by T. Bone Burnett in 1986.

Can you guess the Tom Waits/Ellis Paul song title? The first person to reply with the correct answer will win an Ellis Paul Essentials poster.

It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

I think it's TIME.

Sue Ellen,

And you are correct! :)

Here's Tom Waits' "Time" lyrics:

Time
Well the smart moneys on harlow and the moon is in the street
And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And youre east of east saint louis and the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
And napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon
His invisible fiancees in the mirror
And the band is going home, its raining hammers, its raining nails
And its true theres nothing left for him down here

And its time time time, and its time time time
And its time time time that you love
And its time time time

And they all pretend theyre orphans and their memorys like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you cant remember tell the things you cant forget
That history puts a saint in every dream

Well she said shed stick around until the bandages came off
But these mamas boys just dont know when to quit
And mathilda asks the sailors are those dreams or are those prayers?
So close your eyes, son, and this wont hurt a bit

Oh its time time time, and its time time time
And its time time time that you love
And its time time time

Well things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl
The boys just dive right off the cars and splash into the street
And when theyre on a roll she pulls a razor from her boot
And a thousand pigeons fall around her feet
So put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips
As the dish outside the window fills with rain
Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart
And pay the fiddler off til I come back again

Oh its time time time, and its time time time
And its time time time that you love
And its time time time
And its time time time, and its time time time
And its time time time that you love
And its time time time

I am so relieved that I won't have to steal an Essentials poster out of the bathroom stall at Jammin Java.

Phew. Now I won't have to fight you for the one in the loo!!

I am not familiar with his work, but I saw him on Letterman. While he seems like a fascinating person, he is a bad candidate for a tv interview. :?

SE......congrats on the poster today.

I can see the headline now: Poster goes missing...details at 11. :D

Bonnie - I saw Tom Waits on Letterman the other night and was intrigued
to say the least. He's never been my cup of tea musically, tho the artists who have covered his songs have convinced me he's a fine songwriter.

His interview with Dave was a bit strange.....I guess that Tom Waits just lives in a decidely different world than the rest of us and it showed.
His crossover into character actor roles in movies seems promising.

The song he and his band played (along with Paul and the CBS Orchestra)
sounded interesting, but again failed to really hold my attention.

Tom Waits was also on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart a week or so ago. Same kinda stuff he said on Letterman, but then he played a song. Something old, not off his new album. It was a special request form Jon...it was his birthday and he is a huge fan.

They never have musicians play on the Daily show!
