Jan. 8 in EP Music History Trivia

Postby KarenZ » Thu Jan 08, 2009 10:25 am

Folks,

The other EP (Elvis Presley - aka "The King") was born 74 years ago today on Jan. 8, 1935.

You may remember a good bit of fun we had back in November with Jela's "Guess the Guest" quiz that there are two Ellis Paul songs that mention Elvis - one by name and one by use of another phrase.

Can anyone name the titles of those two Ellis Paul songs? :)

It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Having trouble thinking of the phrase.... I'll need to work on that.

But there is at least one EP song mentioning the King by his first name - and another mentioning the King by his last name.....

I do recall this topic but the songs aren't coming to me right now.

If I were to go out on a limb -- I'd guess the crime spree song is one of them.

I found it! :D

from Ellis Paul's song Bad Bad Blood on American Jukebox Fables

Parker Evans and his bride
with Elvis at their side
were married in a chapel in Vegas
And then they hit a bank
and shot a man point blank
our cameras caught 'em stealing his Lexus

Still listening for the phrase that references the King - haven't found it yet.

But does anyone else out there have the reference to the King by his last name ?

Hats off to all the P members: paddy, patti, potatopicker. Or maybe I should say EP's: Exceptional Ps. :)

John Gorka's tribute to the king.

That's Why
by John Gorka

He was born a man, he died a myth
The man part left and the rest stayed with
One part vision one part dream
Partly mirror and partly screen
That's why, why they say he never died

The fat man's gone the thin one stayed
Still flashy in that gold lame
Lick his back and press him down
Mail him to another town
That's why, why they say he never died

Things got hot in the styles he mixed
Did you see him move in '56
Gun smoke over the Sullivan show
Shot waist up from Tupelo

The Colonel's army took the soul
That went by the name of King Creole
And he's gone gone gone

He's left this life, he's left this stage
He's left the building but not the age
We asked too much we took his best
Couldn't let him live, can't let him rest
That's why, why they say he never died

It's America's own strange disease
How we merchandise our tragedies
If I invoke his name in vain
Then too I share in all the blame
For why, why they say he's still alive

The answer I was looking for - Urban Girlfriend from Urban Folksongs

My urban girlfriend lives down the hall from me.
She's got pictures on her wall of Dylan and Presley.

And while I am sitting hear doing some work at home the sounds of Breaking Through the Radio come through my speakers - and I hear:

Chasing the ghost of the King in Graceland

I think he's everywhere..... like Dylan and Woody and the Beatles - there's a little bit of them in every song we sing today......

Jeff,

Way to go! So now there are THREE (that we can think of!). :)
