Fun Quiz - Sheets, sheets, sheets

Postby KarenZ » Mon Nov 17, 2008 11:52 am

Hi everyone,

Thanks to Jela for that fun quiz we had to work on last week. I've had this quiz on the back burner for a while and thought I'd toss it out today. It occurred to me one day that EP does like his sheets.......the ten lyric samples below confirm that. :)

Your mission, should you agree to accept it, is to name the songs that include the lines of lyric below. Let's take one guess at a time.

1. As the world swept by with its violence
I thought of the shelter we'd find in the sheets
(Changing Your Name)

2. And whatever excuse she makes up for what happened in the sheets
Lord knows, some things have got to change
(Mrs. Jones)

3. .....is dreaming in my sheets
(Home)

4. you were sleeping warm as coal
in a pocket of comfort and white sheets
(Love's Too Familiar a Word - [poem])

5. the sheets are on the line
the flannel ones are mine
(Welcome Home to Maine)

6. when she comes to you wrapped in her sheets
is she beautiful?
(Art of Distance)

7. she is laying in flannel sheets
brass bed speaks "come on lie in me"
(Just the Jester Fool)

8. she ain't worth the hotel sheets
twisted on the bed
(She Was)

9. she comes to my bed like a whisper
slips in the sheet like a ghost.
(Seize the Day)

10. working like a wool blanket on a cotton sheet.
(Harmony [poem])

Have I missed any? :)

Have fun! :D

# 7 From Just The Jester Fool

So I say, "I, uh, like your wooden floor boards"
She is laying in flannel sheets
The brass bed speaks
Come on lie in me
And there I'm standing naked and meek, stalling She says lovingly...

Becky,

I knew you'd chime in on that one! :)

OK....I'll do like Jela and edit the initial post to show which answers have been provided.

Ahhh.. song #9... another favorite..I think I have only heard it LIVE once and that was at my request...

hmm..looking back at the lyrics it made me realize there is a person mentioned in this song that could have been on Jela's quiz!!

#6 - The Art of Distance

When she comes to you wrapped in her sheets
Ain't she beautiful?
Are you going to tell her?
When the touch begins
One step closer
Two steps back again
If you knew...

Awesome Karen!

Dean [and Elaine]

Another one on the list I put on the iPod and hit constant repeat hasn't been answered yet...

Based on clues from Patti and Dean......I'll give another one of these a shot. Pure guess.

9. she comes to my bed like a whisper
slips in the sheet like a ghost.

How about the hidden track on one of the early records......the song about Margaret Putnam?

The title...or untitled track is referred to as "Ghost" -- I think?

Dean, you got it. :)

Paddy, you came up with another one too! I knew you could do it! :)

Patti, are you going to actually give us the title of the song? ;)

Folks,

Patti reminded me of another (way to go, Patti!) so I've added one more to the list. HINT: lyrics can be from songs or poems. :)

#9 Seize the Day.... love that song, and not one that ever got played live very often, at least at the shows I've been to.

she comes to my bed like a whisper
slips in the sheet like a ghost.

I wonder if the Rollaway Bed had sheets on it.!!

I know the last one!
It's from the intro to one of the "Conversation with a Ghost"s on LIVE . The reference is comparing Patti Griffin's voice to Ellis's.... and if I remember correctly, was a writing exercise?

Wendy, you're correct that #10 is the track preceding "conversation with a ghost" on disk 2 of Live.....I don't remember it being a writing exercise.....although it could have been the way my memory is. :)

Do you have a title? :)

Okay, question #2 has to be Mrs. Jones. Thinking about this song makes me really want to pull the Live CD out. I haven't heard this song in such a long time.

Becky and all,

Oddly enough (another BIG hint) it was listening to back-to-back songs on Disk 2 of the live CD that sparked the quiz. ;) (That disk actually contains three of the sheets songs.)

Since no one has answered #4 yet, I thought I might...it's from the poem "Love's too familiar a word."
Gosh, now that I wrote that, I hope it's right. :D

Thanks for the clues....couldn't of guessed it without them - 10 is from Harmony (the poem which starts of CD2 on the 'Live' album).

Karen - it was fun doing this quiz and really nice to see so many people having a go. Thanks.

From the 1972 self titled release Willis Alan Ramsey comes this song.....Shawn Colvin recorded it, too! 8)

Satin Sheets
by Willis Alan Ramsey
(who played in my best friend's back yard in Houston in the early 70's)

I wish I was a millionaire
Play rock music and grow long hair
Tell your boys
‘Bout a new Rolls-Royce

Pretty women callin' me
Give ‘em all the third degree
Give ‘em satin sheets
To keep ‘em off the streets

Hallelujah let me sock it to ya
Praise the Lord, and pass the mescaline
Trade your whole world
You'll come over
As soon as you see me boogie-woogie ‘cross the silver screen

Hang ‘em high, hang ‘em low
Put ‘em in the ceilings wherever I go
And they'd swing all night
In the rafter light

Hallelujah, what's it to ya?
Got your coffee, me, I got my Spanish tea
Trade your whole world
You'll come over
As soon as you hear me playing my calliope

I wish I was a millionaire
Play rock music and grow long hair
Tell your boys
‘Bout a new Rolls-Royce

Thanks Karen......once again, BIG FUN!!! :D
