May 30 in EP Music History Trivia

But Lincoln's eyes of stone stare cool
As if bored of the reflecting pool
Or hardened by what's hidden from his sight
-- Ellis Paul in "Washington, DC"

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., was dedicated by President Warren G. Harding on May 30, 1922. This memorial has been the backdrop for many important public protests and events since its completion. It was on the memorial's steps that singer Marian Anderson gave her Easter Sunday concert in 1939 after being turned away from Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in August 1963. In describing his statue of Lincoln, sculptor Daniel Chester French said: "The memorial tells you just what manner of man you are come to pay homage to: his simplicity, his grandeur, and his power."

Mark Erelli's brand-spanking new CD Delivered ends with a track titled "Abraham" that will knock your socks off.

"Washington, DC" is one of my favorite EP songs. I know....I know....they're all my favorites..... ;)

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
