It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Yaaaa !! Got my computer fixed, have lots of "important" things to do, but first things first.. Paddy was 17 a hint?..... See if it was then that is the CD that I never had the lyric booklet to.... Nope that song isn't even on CD that I am missing the lyric book ... hmmm... (though no lryic book came with Sweet Mistake either.
I am still stumped by the title of the song that 26 across comes from

26 across...if ya look closely...is 17 on this 17th day of May.
Patti....ooooops. I was wrong about my hint.....mea culpa.
Ya see, I was thinking it was from this song:
Washington D.C. 5/91
from Say Something
Politician and a stewardess
Underneath the monuments and the moon
My hint was to the age of the story.....5/91 to 5/08 = 17 years
Here's the clue for 26 across from the crossword:
26. beneath the _____ I told you my heart wouldn't change
I still don't have the song title although I think I know the word.
How I managed to make an already challenging puzzle even more so I do not know. Sorry, everybody......

Karen,
OK. So I am a few weeks late to this particular party.
Thanks so much for putting this together! Jen and I both had a great time with it. I believe that Jen got all but one answer. I am down five, but have not cheated and have not read the whole thread for fear of answers being revealed. I have not given up yet.
Great idea! Fun!

Shari,
Better to have found it late than never to have lived at all. Or something like that.
