Ellis Paul in Texas - March 28-29, 2008

Folks,

Sorry I forgot my camera for the Mucky Duck show in Houston, but I did manage to get a few fairly decent shots at the shows in Crockett, TX and Ft. Worth, TX. for your viewing pleasure. :)

Karen...thanks for sharing those pics..... 8)

Funny....we have an Ellis Road around here, too!!! :D

Your photo of bluebonnets reminded me of a favorite old Nanci Griffith song that come to think of it I would love to hear Ellis and Antje cover some day.

Gulf Coast Highway ~ Nanci Griffith

Gulf Coast Highway
He worked the rails
He worked the rice fields
With their cool dark wells
He worked the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico
The only thing we've ever owned
Is this old house here by the road
And when he dies he says he'll catch some blackbird's wing
Then he will fly away to Heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring

She walked through springtime
When I was home
The days were sweet
The nights were warm
The seasons change the jobs would come the flowers fade
This old house felt so alone
When the work took me away
And when she dies she says; she'll catch some blackbird's wing
Then she will fly away to Heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring

Highway 90
The jobs are gone
We tend our garden
We set the sun
This is the only place on earth blue bonnets grow
Once a year they come and go
At this old house here by the road
And when we die we say we'll catch some blackbird's wing
Then we will fly away to heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring

And when we die we'll catch some blackbird's wing
We will fly away together come some sweet blue bonnet spring

Great to see the pix - thanks for posting them. Now I must tell you this story........on Monday evening we went to see Brooks Williams (absolutely stunning guitarist who put on a fabulous show) and he told the audience about this place in Crockett, Texas where he plays at the Camp Street cafe and there is a statue of one of his heroes Lightnin' Hopkins - he has written a song about sitting at the feet of Lightnin' Hopkins and he played it on Monday. Well Richard and I couldn't believe the coincidence that he was talking about the place where our friend Karen had been just a few nights before to see Ellis and Peter Mulvey!

After the show we spoke with Brooks and told him about this coincidence, I think he was just as flabbergasted as we were at the coincidence and he said that the last time he'd played there he'd seen that EP and PM were on the bill and he knew that he'd be in the UK when they were on. He obviously knows the pair of them and said nice things about both guys.

Well they do say its a small world and it seems to be getting smaller and smaller!

Jela

PS I'm going to start a Brooks Williams thread.

Saw him once, too in a small venue in Texas.....years ago. 8)

A new thread on BW would be great..... :)

Jela,

That is just FREAKY!

I have one or two Brooks Williams CDs, but I confess I've never really given them a proper listen. I'll try to remedy that.

Well the area was called Ellis.. there was an Ellis Ave, Ellis Playground, Ellis Nursing Home... something Ellis for every age group!!.. I even have Ellis # 1 in my yearbook!! I didn't happen to live on Ellis Ave, but several of my friends did. ALSO, I now live 2 streets away from an Ellis St.. You can never have enough Ellis in your life!!
