Haiku revisited

I have a hankering for some Haiku. Do we dare see if we can break our previous Haiku record? I think we had close to 200 posts on our old Haiku thread.

To recap: Haiku is a form of traditional Japanese poetry. Haiku is a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.

That said, our mission is to post a Haiku that describes a person, place or thing in an Ellis Paul song. Let's guess the answer to one Haiku before moving on to another.

We'll start with a really easy one. :)

My life is loose ends
But time stands still when I whirl
Step through my black hole

Who am I? :)

Jeezum crow guys...I couldn't have made this any easier. Are we all Haiku-ed out or what? Say it isn't so! :o

I didn't see Maria there at all. Total blank.......

Here's an easy one......

Efforts wane away
Too late, lost is yesterday
Numbered love is past

I'll try my first ever haiku in life. Here it is:

open your eyes now

his life over, just like that

fire hose, not just yet

potato picker,

Easy for you to say!

I'm going to guess :

SEVEN

Paddy - you nailed the song - I think I left enough clues there. It is of course the singer in the song "Seven" which is moving up my list of favorites. I'm working on yours - too many choices right now......

Jeff,

Are you kidding me? The first try!!! I was totally guessing on memory
of that fine song. I think it was the word that [numbered] that had me thinking 7 . And of of course old love[ 2nd line ]

Anyway, wow, I'm stoked.

Not sure if mine is done the right way.
I was not in on the first haiku thread that reached 200 posts.

Will see in the morning?

Ask for a rewrite if necessary guys......or clues

I like Karen's suggestion to guess the current Haiku before putting another one on the table.

So Paddy's is up:

open your eyes now

his life over, just like that

fire hose, not just yet

I like Karen's suggestion too. I was in the process of creating and posting mine when Jeff snuck his in there. I was surprised to see his when I FINALLY got mine up there.

A word to the wise - - - or at least all of you wiser than me.

I may have misunderstood this song entirely, rendering my first ever haiku for the most part null and void. Went back to the lyrics to the song and realized what may be my mistake.

I really believed that one of three people had passed. Upon further review, I'm just not sure. Ellis, if you're reading this one, a lil help.

Until then, I want to tweak my haiku just a bit. Work off either, same result.

Is that him?, look see

sunny,bright, mourning alright

can't stand or think straight

Jela,

sorry, not the King of 7th Avenue, but I see that one.

Please don't hold my feet to the flame.

Hmmm. How about the speaker in Ashes to Dust?
I can see how that one might cause some confusion.

Wendy,

Thank You ever so much. You are of course Correct!!!!!

I'll be happy to try and solve these way more than being on stage
hoping someone can figure out just what the hec I'm talking about?

I just always thought this song, my first Ellis song, was about a man who had just died. I never really glanced lyrics, ever.

I'll improve, I will

Hey Paddy, You're welcome!

You're doing fine! You notice I'm not writing any Haiku myself...

Please allow me. It's short. It was my first. The legacy 2 version that is. I believe Ellis was not thrilled with the mix of this song as it appears on The Windham Hill released legacy 2. I think it was a surprise to Ellis when he heard the final version. Hey Ellis, if they were sweet mistakes, I say, God Bless Will Ackerman.

Ashes To Dust
from the album Urban Folk Songs

Wake up Mother I think he's coming home
I guess he grew tired of living on his own
And here I sit bewildered, wondering if I've grown
Staring out the window and waiting on the phone

(Chorus)
You see I believed in alibis, broken glass and lullabies
Born was I in the 70's
Born to catch the sun
But I'm burned alive in memories
To ashes and dust I run, I run

Wake up mother I think he's coming home
I guess he grew tired of living on his own
And here I sit bewildered, staring through the pane
The glass it is still shattered...and everything remains unchanged.

(Repeat Chorus)

Paddy, good one :!:

Hint: This is a place and a thing.

I'm still and I'm cold
He casts a shadow o'er me
Look close, see yourself.

What am I :?: :)

Karen, here's my wild guess:

The solace of Kathy's roof top in NYC, while 60 million light bulbs(Edison's fault) allow the skyline to swallow the moon. Upon close inspection, I do in fact see myself, because this is paddyinthepub's song!

Good one Karen, now please watch my back and lie to me if I'm wrong.

Paddy,

I cannot tell a lie. You're wrong.

Remember the hint....it's a location that could also be considered a thing.

karen, I like your style. working on my lil guys ability to stretch the truth. One minute manager here and off the top of my head:

The surface of Mars

from the song Speed of Trees

Honesty is the best policy!

by paddyinthepub
ok, the 1 min mgr's boss here....he needs to slow down.

The face of the moon - - -same song - -Speed of trees.

Sometimes I wish Paddy would move at the speed of trees.

Paddy, those are your guesses? (Surface of mars? Face of the moon?)

If so...sorry...still wrong. ;) Hmmm...maybe we need another clue...the he who is casting a shadow is a pretty big clue.... :)

mornin, not sure i have this one and will stay out in left field
for awhile if that's ok. So now playing left field for the ellis forum all-stars:

paddyinthepub: bats right; throws right; average speed on the base paths

But HIS guesses are clearly out of left field. For example:

Karen, is it Godzilla in Japan?

I think I am replying to Karen's Hiaku....first time posting on the new board...

Karen it "must" be in Washington...at the Lincoln Memorial... cold stone, reflecting pool......if not then I need another cup of coffee.

Posted: Sat Jun 24, 2006 7:45 am
by paddyinthepub
upon further review....and coming from further out in left field is this guess:

Lincoln's eyes at the monument overlooking the reflection pool from Washington DC 5/91

ok, what just happened here? patti? anybody?

Patti,

Yes...it's the reflecting pool....and welcome to the new board :!:

Paddy, you were close :!:

There is an expression for that tho it escapes me now. Way to go patti!!!
As usual, I'm a minute late and a dollar short { ep pin reference }.

Pat on my own back for ALMOST gettin it tho, finally! My expression for that is a quote from Van the man.." come a ty yigh yippie " :!:

Who's next to try?

I'll give it a go:

my favorite one
followed by a couple more
I hope never end

What am I?

I guess you could say it's a thing.

Hope my haiku above was not too obscure; after re-reading just now it looks like it is.

So here is a clue......it is a thing that most folks enjoy, is chalk full of possibilities, and not to be taken for granted.

There, I'm feeling better now.

Good luck!

It's Monday morning, so another clue should do the trick.

One just passed you by

Hope you made the most of it

No guarantees, right?

Pretty cool that my clue is in haiku, if I do say so........

3rd time should be the charm.

As Regis used to say: is that your final answer?

As paddy would say: that is a hint....

by wendy
a woman never has to give a final answer! (well, almost never  )

That answer does not fit your original Haiku, but sure does fit the hint... I'm still lost Paddy. Hopefully someone else's brain is working better this Monday a.m. :!:

by paddyinthepub
Wendy, I think your brain is working fine this morning, and that was a great guess based on the clue I gave today. I'm realizing that it's far easier to post haiku than to guess. Tho I feel like I'm leading you guys on a wild goose chase somehow, so maybe I should just give the answer and move on.

Here's another hint:

you were not far off at all. it is a song title of ellis'.

remember, it is Monday!!!

Karen's could have also been Chris McCandless...I am reading "Into the Wild" and it is a very compelling tale.

I've recently read 'Into the Wild' and thoroughly enjoyed the book which leaves you asking more questions about why people decide to 'go into the wild' - what is it that they are searching for? Perhaps they don't often know themselves what it is they are seeking.............as I mentioned on the old board Sean Penn is to direct/produce a film of the book and I shall look forward to seeing that one day.

Maybe Ellis will get the opportunity to record 'Chris McCandless' for the film? I hope so.
