sports references in song

Postby paddyinthepub » Wed Aug 30, 2006 9:42 am

Karen, your topic on Hometown Sports and Notables had me thinking of a few songs by a couple of favorites of mine that happen to bring sports or athletes into song. Originally thought of making mention of those songs and artists in your newly started thread only now I think it might deserve a thread all it's own. So, it's another look at how something as simple as sports have found their way into song via the artistry of singers and songwriters. Here's a few that come to mind right now:

"There's a football Hall of Famer in the phonebook"

From the song The Ballad of Jamie Bee by John Gorka....

and

"Life beyond the playground fence....serious as basketball"

From the song Where The Bottles Break also by John Gorka.....

I'm a huge fan of John Gorka and have seen him play live numerous times. He used to play The Ballad of Jamie Bee early on when it was brand spankin new though it's been forever since I've heard him do it. Great song!

John played the Mucky Duck in Houston the very night after the Houston Rockets had won the NBA Championship. Well, I thought the town had gone nuts enough the night before, when John got to the line in his song Where The Bottles Break that touches on the fact that Life beyond the playground fence is serious as basketball....HOLY COW, the folks in the audience erupted in applause so loud it was almost earth shaking.

Circa 1994 ~ 1995

Hard to recall since we won back to back NBA Championships. :D

Paddy.....the obvious one, of course:

"She's winding up like Satchel Page" -- Ellis Paul

Now THAT would be a pitch! ;)

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Looks like John Gorka is ahead 3 to 1 in the bottom of the first folks:

"Pittsburgh has the Steelers and the Pirates and the Thieves"

From Grand Larceny by John Gorka.

John's car was apparently broken in to while playing a gig there.

He was none too happy and sought revenge in song.

And a great song at that.

The opening pages of Ellis' book "Notes From The Road" has Ellis "trying" to surf in the waters off the coast of California. Too funny. I've tried to surf before, didn't work for me either.

let's go surfin now
