PeteM,

Welcome! Really nice having a new voice on the board. Since you're located in Manchester, think about joining a bunch of us who are planning to have our very first EP discussion board gathering on Aug. 5 in Ogunquit.

Hi all. I've been lurking here for quite a while, but decided its finally time to say hello. You're an incredible group. Ellis is lucky to have you all on his team!

Pete said he stopped by to say hello. With Bonuela's recent concert inquiry. along with the get to know you better survey, I'm counting 20 questions. Hey, sounds kinda catchy!!!

I dunno tho, it's akin to a press conference...........and I don't want to chase Pete back into the comforts of lurkdom.

Having said that, Pete, WHERE WERE YOU ON THE NIGHT OF THE Great Big Sea concert? Did ya buy a t- shirt? Any cute girls there? Are ya going to Ogunquit?............Ogunquit???.........7 days ago was my first time to hear of this town and I've used it in a sentence 6x already.

Thanks for the kind words Pete, and you're right, they/we ARE an incredible group.

Won't you join us? Oh wait, you just did! In that case:

WELCOME :!: :!:

Who was it that said the following? : ''I'd never want to join a club that would have me as a member!''

Let's let Pete answer that last one :!:

Hey all,
Thanks for the great welcome. It's good to be here...officially that is!

Karen, I'm even closer than Manchester. Portsmouth is across the river from Maine. Ogunquit is only about 25 minutes up the road. I was definitely thinking about catching that show. I missed the Stone Church, which is even closer. I'd be ashamed of myself if this one slips past me. Speaking of slipped past, thats exactly what happened with GBS in Somerville. My head has been off circling some other planet these past few months. All sorts of good shows came and went that I managed to miss.

Little bit of trivia for everyone - Ogunquit means "Beautiful Place By the Sea". At least thats what the billboard on the way into town says. Could be just something the tourist people thought up. Sounds good though, doesn't it?

Pete,

I'm sure we'll talk more about the Ogunquit show plans closer to the date, so stay tuned.

I'n curious.....you said that you had been lurking for a while....what finally prompted you to join us and post? You can PM me if you'd rather not say in public....or if you'd rather not respond, that's OK too. :)

Hi Karen,

Actually I had posted a few times back when it was the original board. However, when that one went the way of the mortgage/viagra/credit card specials I stopped tuning in. I tried again after a while and was pleasantly suprised to find one of the nicest message board communities out here. So, with the advent of the new board I decided it was high time to stop lurking and jump in. You have all been great!

PeteM - welcome ! Another Cowboy Junkie fan ? And Maria McKee - you have excellent taste.....

As indicated ealrlier - get to Ogunquit man (despite the higher-end tourist trap nature of much of it....). It wil lbe a fine show, and we will figure out a way to get folks together before or after or both....

Patti - hello from another in Southern Mass (just a Mainer living in Exile right now....). Are you close enough to make Brennan's Grille in Easton for the next time he plays there ? It is usually agreat show - not sure when he is there next, but well worth the trip if you are in the area. Circle of Friends (in their new home in Franklin) is also a good bet.

Welcome aboard.....

Hey Jeff,

Sounds like a fun get together on the 5th. Yea, Ogunquit is a total tourista trap, but also one of the prettiest beaches around. Love to go up to that beach on hot nights to go for a run when it's low tide. A six mile round trip run, and then you dive in. Its great.

The Maria Mckee song I listed is the best for summer driving. 8)

I have had a completely unrequited crush on Mari aMcKee for at least 15 years now....... Some day I will seee her sing in person. What a voice.

Ogunquit is a very nice beach - one of the 3 or 4 nicest pure beaches in Maine.

Patti,

Did I caption the picture and give you credit? If not, I'll do it. I tried to be careful about that on all those miscellaneous photos.

Patti - you meant those questions for Jeff... :)

I guess I have only seen Tom Rush there since they changed hands, although I thought Ellis had been back there once. But I will ping htem for a return. For Tom's show we somehow ended up at the table directly in front of the stage, just to the right of center. Spitting seats....

I remember the fez. I can't remember the reason........ Aarggh......

I think I used to have an old 8 track of Tom Rush. I'm sure the player ate it like it did so many of them.

Did he once sound ALOT like James Taylor?

No, I don't think Tom Rush ever sounded like JT, even in either of their early days. They did sing some similar-type songs, but the voices were/are completely different to my ears.

Would agree with you Wendy. I like both of them very much, and have heard them each a few times live (okay, Tom more than a few times). Too much New Hampshire gravel in Mr. Rush's voice to sound like Mr. Taylor's I think.

Just to update a few artists mentioned in this thread. It seems a young James Taylor cited Tom Rush as a major influence. I did not know that and I'm a big time fan. There must be a cover Tom did of a JT song that had me thinking they sounded similar.

Jeff and Pete, I like the music of the Cowboy Junkies a bit myself. The reason I bing this up now is that I am a big time junky for the music of fellow native Houstonian and cowboy picker poet in his own right, Robert Earl Keen, Jr. I have and like all his records, each in their own way. The one titled ''PICNIC'' was produced by the Cowboy Junkies brother/sister team. It was a bit of a departure for Robert Keen and an attempt to crossover to mainstream whatever. The two CJ members felt they just HAD to work with Robert, they were big fans as well. If you haven't heard this fine album yet, it comes highly recommended. Course, I'm biased.

Hey Paddy,

You're right....Tom did cover JT's Rainy Day Man, and did a great job. I'll have to check out Robert Earl Keen. I've heard a lot about him, but don't know his music. Thanks for the recommendation. I've discovered some great music from all of you.

Peter, for Robert Earl Keen recordings, check out "West Textures" and "No Kinda Dancer" They're old, but full of great stuff.
I'm afraid I'm less familiar with his more recent music. He is a HOOT live, however! (something you might not guess from his music. Or maybe you would; depends on how dry your sense of humor is 8) )

You gotta be careful here Pete. It's been said that your first might be your favorite. Lots of fine records from REK and I have to agree with Wendy on a few points:

No Kinda Dancer.............. The debut lp.

West Textures................. 2nd lp

Only a few artists have delivered as fine a one two punch coming out of the gate.

While he's gotten better and funnier....(a hoot in concert) those first 2 records to me are timeless and vintage Robert Keen.

Enjoy the discovery.

Pete, good luck with your entre into REK and how it all fits the budget. I'll admit it, I have found awesome prices on gently used cds from artists who I wanna check out. Robert Keen is not gonna starve if you go that route.

I saw a bunch out at amazon in the 5 dollar range. That's where I'd start.
Check back from time to time with what you've heard and thought.

Warning: on his first record his voice will have you wondering how anyone allowed this guy to consider making a career out of singing. It was always a unique sound that came out to be sure. Often likened to the sound a calf might make if it were stuck in the mud. It has aged well over the miles and years but I much prefer the sound he made early on. You'll see.

Welcome back, ChristyT! It's good to see you on the board again!
