Death of Myron Cope - Feb. 27, 2008

Postby KarenZ » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:17 am

Folks,

Anyone who's ever watched a Steelers game, knows the voice of Myron Cope, the voice of the Steelers for 35 years. Mr. Cope, a big celebrity in these parts, died today at age 79. There would be no Terrible Towel without him.

His obituary from this morning's Pittsburgh Press:

Karen
"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Karen,

Sad news indeed....

First the Steelers said good bye to long time running back Jerome Bettis when he decided it was time to put "the bus" in the barn (retire) so to speak. Then the news came a few years later that long time head coach of the Steelers Bill Cowher had decided it was time to move on. It made watching the Steelers this year much less exciting for me.

To learn the news about the latest departure of a long time Steeler franchise icon with the passing of Myron Cope, I can't help feeling the collective pain the Pittsburgh sports loving community is surely feeling today.

Loved watching the Steelers on TV for the 2 years and football seasons we lived there. It was during the Kordell Stewart years. Talk about fun. I thought leaving Houston and Houston Oiler fandom with the likes of Head Coach Bum Phillips was the last I'd see such characters in sports.

Enter Myron Cope. What a voice...what enthusiasm, what a character. I stumbled upon his radio broadcast one Sunday when the Steelers were playing and we were away from home and a tv to watch. Found it on the radio and low and behold...there he was. After that particular day of discovery, I made it a point to watch Steeler games with the sound OFF on the tv and the Myron's radio color commentary ON.

Yinz had a great one!!!

Found this on the website of TV station KDKA in Pittsburgh:

Dave Crawley's Tribute To Myron Cope
Hearing the sad news that former Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope passed away, our own Dave Crawley wrote this special tribute to the man with a special place in Pittsburghers' hearts.

Ode To Myron
By Dave Crawley

Remember those plays from long ago days?
Which was your ultimate choice?
Those were the teams we'll remember in dreams.
And we'll always remember "The Voice."

Like gravel on grit. Yet, somehow it fit
A team that struggles and sweats.
In a city of steel that demands the real deal,
Myron Cope was as real as it gets.

"Okle dokle!" he cried, as Stallworth went wide.
He invented the name for "The Bus,"
And coined the "Steel Curtain." One thing is certain:
He always will be one of us.

"Yoi!" he would cry as Ben took to the sky.
"Double yoi!" as Hines made the catch.
For 35 years he led us in cheers,
With a towel that no team could match.

With electrified verve, he struck the right nerve
To elicit the passion we crave.
And as we go back on our memory track,
May that Terrible Towel yet wave.

We'll never forget that we owe a great debt
To the sportsman who brought us such joy.
Though we're not sure just when, we'll see you again.
But, until then, "Triple yoi!"
