James Keelaghan and Garnet Rogers

Postby bostonianfolkie » Wed Mar 14, 2007 3:17 pm

These are two Canadian songwriters that I think are similar in some ways to Ellis. Both, like Ellis, do a great job writing slices-of-lic story songs in a way that is genuine and heartfelt. They have both been around for a very long time and would recommend either of them. Canada has a great folk scene ranging from great singer-songwriters, singer-songwriters who go between writing and singing folk tunes of their heritage (Keelaghan has a great new album of mostly Canadian, Irish, and English tunes), Celtic type groups (much of Canada is of Scottish and Irish descent), and fiddle players.

Best bets:

James Keelaghan: Timelines, Home, A Few Simple Verses
Garnet Rogers: Shining Thing, Sparrow's Wing, Small Victory

James Keelaghan absolutely WOWED the crowds at Kerrville back in the day. We have 2 of his older CDs and both are excellent. I have not had the chance to sample Garnet Rogers solo stuff but do know well the music he made with his brother, the late great Stan Rogers. :)
