I waited up for Santa last night but could barely keep my eyes open. All the same I rec'd an early gift when I heard Antje Duvekot's voice singing softly over a Bank of America commercial. :D

Well best of luck to Antje I love all her music, but I have to say this surprises me just because of most of the performers I've seen and listened to, she seemed the least likely to "sing for a big bank"...

Though I can appreciate she has to do (can and should do) what ever it is that she wants with HER music!!

I need to give this song another listen.

while watching the patriots vs giants game and playing monopoly with my boyfriend a commercial comes on with a sweet voice singing. the two of us stop and give a very confused look to the tv.

"is that antje!?"

it definatly made me giggle to hear antjes sweet voice streaming through the...tv...

and the patriots won.

I did the same thing. Watching Patriots, kind of bored, Antje?! (continued to freak out). It was so cool though, I'm happy for her.

We were watching tv late last night when the commercial came on with Antje's song playing soft in the background. I'm pretty sure my wife was unaware that Antje had a song in a national commercial.....so i looked over at her to make sure she knew who was singing...then I asked:

You know who that is singing, don't you?

"Of course, I do" she replied, with a smile...... :)

I heard it too. I was in the other room, so when I yelled it out, three of us ran to the living room at the same time!!

I am listening to the song as I type now and I am having a hard time understanding the lyrics other than the chorus. It is from a live recording.. and then it segues right into Long Way :) Now that is a song that should get some attention.. truly one of her best!!

Patti,

Here are the lyrics. I am not sure of one line (marked with ??), but the rest I am sure of:

Merry Go Round

Someone is tossing petals in the stream
Somewhere someone is standing at the foothills of their dreams
And someone got a paintbrush is painting over doubts
Someone opened up his eyes and saw the sun is coming out
Someone was captive and found the courage to get off
Through a border in the well, somewhere the rain has stopped ??
Someone is finding the place where they belong

Everyday is summer somewhere in the world
And the summer boys are headed for the falls to kiss the girls
With their impatient groping honey, breasts and curls
They are filled with desire
And high in the hills, there’s a baby being born
There’s forgiveness and peace wash over bruises and sores
People bridging the distance over nettles and thorns

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise out so that others come down
If the devil don’t dance heaven won’t shine
It’s a mighty thick haze and a pretty thin line
If the faucet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

Rich man counting money, tired man counting sheep
While the safe man counts his blessings, the hungry man has beans
There's a million people praying, raising up their eyes
To what turns out to be the same god, the same sky
We are slightly scared of death, a little bit afraid
So we celebrate everything we can think to celebrate
We shall sing out loud to keep the hounds away

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise up so that others come down
If the devil don't dance, heaven won't shine
It's a mighty thick haze and it's a pretty thin line
If the faucet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

Prisons will crumble and governments will fall
It's the order of freedom to be preceded by walls
Cause the truth would be worthless if no one ever lied
So we carry our shame in the interest of pride
And we have all these questions to make us go roaming
And we’ve got all this distance to make us come home
As the sun burns, a child learns, the tide churns, the world turns

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise up so that others come down
If the devil don't dance, heaven won't shine
It's a mighty thick haze and it's a pretty thin line
If the faucet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

Enjoy!

:-)

Merry Go round was one of my first favorite songs of Antje's and some of the lyrics still really ring for me. Most notably:

"There's a million people praying, raising up their eyes
To what turns out to be the same god, the same sky"

I firmly believe that one... and...

"Cause the truth would be worthless if no one ever lied
So we carry our shame in the interest of pride"

I think about that one alot.

I don't actually have a working television (by choice), so I don't get to enjoy seeing the commercial. Kind of ironic that I actively banished commericals from my life but I wish I could see this one!

Oh! Almost forgot. I do believe that there is a newly recorded version of Merry Go Round on her mysace page:

Thanks, well that helps a lot. Some of the lyrics are very powerful. The new recording is much easier to understand. I only saw a few seconds of the commercial but I think it had to do with New Orleans and Katrina, though I am confused how the bank of america put a spin on this..I hope to see the commericial again.

Antje's song "merry go round" is up on her myspace. Millions of American television viewers will be hearing Antje for the first time as the song plays over the current Bank Of America commercials.

Also up on her myspace player is a live version of "Pearls"

Anyone know who is singing with her on this one?

I got a Myspace bulletin from a friend. He was asking if anyone knew who sang the song on the ad. He thought it was Shawn Colvin. I set him straight and now he is off to buy Antje's CD's.

Just read this on Antje's myspace....from one of her blogs:

When Antje discovered the substream folk world, where the Ellis Paul's and John Gorka's plied their wares, she was immediately hooked. In the secret cellars, where honest songs were sung, she found kindred spirits, fellow exiles, a society of outcasts.

"I love that it's an underground scene," she says, "because that means it's based on the merit of the songs, not the marketing. It's a very real scene that connects the fans to the artists without a whole lot in between."

As she hard-travels from open-mike to bohemian bar, coffeehouse to veggie cafe, singing for anyone who will listen, her songs have become her press agent, as fans and fellow artists spread the word about this remarkable new songwriting voice.

Asked what she hopes people get from her songs, she laughs shyly.

"I hope they get softened up inside," she says, "emotionally moved. And happy. Because I think it makes you happy to be moved, even if it's by a sad song. I've never found anything like songs, that can get so many elements of my heart and brain working all at once. They're just a few minutes long, but you can live a whole life in a song."

Here's a nice writeup on Antje Duvekot and the Bank of America ad. I never really thought about it, but since the song was re-recorded for the tv ad AND someone had to produce THAT version of Merry Go Round -- I should have known...it was Flynn!!! :D

Wow!! Where have I been?!!

Ok, I know I am coming waaay late to the game, but I just saw Antje for the first time on Sunday.....Awesome!! I took a friends advice and bought "Big Dream Boulevard" as my first purchase. She had done 'Dandelion' that night. I loooove it!! I can't get enough of 'Sex Bandaid' - which, IMO must be listened to at earbleeding levels!!

So, that's all...just wanted to share the obvious with people I knew would understand.

Thanks to Ellis! I can't imagine how long it would have taken me to stumble onto her, if not for his generosity of spirit towards other singer songwriters! I love that!!

Annie,

I am so glad that you like her music! (being that she is my other favorite singer/songwriter) I am hoping that she'll come back to Eddie's Attic again on her own.

Next time I will have to figure a way to know who you are and meet you!

I'm guessing you might be reaching some level of OCD status by now with Antje Duvekot's CD Big Dream Boulevard and that's a good thing around here. 8) It happens with the best of them...... :D

Glad you're liking it, too, and happy you're here to share the love. :)

While I'm here....noticed Antje opens for John Gorka at Jonathan's in Ogunquit, ME. on Saturday May 10th. :D

Patti - we think that our friend from Australia, Colin Fielding who is a Radio DJ from Melbourne is going to be at tonight's show. If you hear an Aussie accent, say hello to him.

He's been in the US for a month, starting with SXSW and travelling all around for music. He plays Ellis a lot on the radio.

Have a great evening

Antje played the Circle of Friends in Franklin the other night. There were over 200 people, which considering that she has a few shows in "the general area" this upcoming weekend and the fact the last time she was there she was the opener proves her star is rising fast!! Sean Staples did accompany her but not Duke. I didn't keep a set list, but she did most of the songs from Big Dream Blvd. Also the new ones she played on WERS, and Merry Go Round, which had fallen out of favor for her, but now she likes again, thanks to Bank Of America. All her songs are great thought provoking songs.. she did a few covers, a Cohen song and the Penny Evans song , love them all but my favorite was probably the James Taylor cover of
Machine Gun Kelley.. Loved It...
She is still trying to find her faith and she is also becoming a Red Sox fan, thanks to her boyfriend and Big Papi!! She told lots of little stories but the best one being about meeting Joan Baez the day before.. She thinks now she maybe shouldn't have drunk the margarita before the meeting!! Too Funny. Great Show, catch her when you can...

I love Machine Gun Kelly by James Taylor -- or should I use the alias JT used for that album -- Mudslide Slim. 8) Must have been great to hear Antje cover that song. Thanks for the update, Patti, on what sounds like a fine evening of music and stories from Miss Duvekot.

Antje was sitting in the seat in front of me on my flight to DC. I don't think she's used to getting recognised as a folkstar. She was very nice when I introduced myself, but a little confused as to how I would know her if she didn't know me. :D

I did not bother to tell her that I was listening to Sex Band-aid as I packed that morning. Didn't want to freak the poor girl out.

I just saw Antje at a show a few weeks ago.. she is a def. favorite of mine..can't wait for the new CD that RIchard Shindell produced. Her newsletter just stated she was heading to Europe/England on her "winning our Allies back folk tour"!!! She must have been pleased about Obama winning too...

In all honesty i would have probably made a big old fool of myself trying to talk to Antje about my few degrees of separation from the forum to her music and her......I did it once at a house concert in New Jersey and though I tried my best the level of comfort was absent. Course back then Antje was pretty shy and may well be still to this day. I did give her a EP lapel pin that day.....so we will always have that!
