Danny Schmidt

Saw Danny last night at a (private) House Concert or more correctly, a marquee concert as it was held in a marquee in the the owners' garden. Great atmosphere, with us all sitting cosily inside, wine glasses to hand and being warmed by a fire from a free standing stove. The date had been switched from Thursday (when I couldn't go) to Sunday (when I could) so I managed to blag entry for the two of us. Turned out that the hosts were a couple that we see at concerts but we hadn't known in advance that it was their home and it was their very first house concert.

Danny played two sets each lasting approximately 50/60 mins so we got a fabulous selection of songs from his catalogue. First set opened with one of my favourites 'Better Off Broke' and closed with the only cover of the evening, Dylan's 'Buckets of Rain'.

Second set was mostly requests that had been made during the interval including greedy guts here who asked for two 'Cleopatra' and 'Company of Friends' and both got played.

A wonderful evening - if you like songs where you have to really listen to the lyrics then do go and see Danny Schmidt if/when he's in your neck of the woods.

It was such a successful evening that I think the hosts are likely to do more house/garden concerts - certainly hope so, especially as it's only about 15 miles from home for us.

I just love house concerts!

Here's Eric Taylor at Oasis House Concerts in San Diego. Eric has perfected the art of Texas Song Theatre with little more than guitar, tale, and song. Occasional swig from a pint seems to keep it real. Here's a story and song so well told and so long in length it took two parts. The first part begins the story, the second ends the story, then Eric brings the story to life, in song. Enjoy. Especially you, Herve.

Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett won Golden Globe for a song in a movie that stars Jeff Bridges. I can't think of the movie title but it's one I now want to see. Love Jeff Bridges, who took GG for Best Actor!
