I've heard the MySpace song "My Almost Lover" alot, but was not familiar with the artist's name....which happens alot. :)

I'd yet to hear the song or anything about the band. I had the sound down on the Letterman show and hadn't noticed time had come for the musical act. By chance I glanced over and the redhead was just staring into the camera and singing. She's really a natural on camera. I sat mesmerized and for a minute just stared. Then I thought, dummy, turn the volume up and see if the sound is any where near as impressive as the visual. Truth be told I wasn't expecting it to be. Boy was I ever wrong...... :D

Her bio here....

A Fine Frenzy is the music of 22 year-old Alison Sudol. After teaching herself to play piano, Alison increasingly invested her internal narratives into song form. She found solace in the melodic melancholia of new global British bands Aqualung, Radiohead, Coldplay and Keane, etc... She was also moved by the diatonic minimalism of Philip Glass and the transportive allure of Icelandic music (Bjork, Sigur Ros.) Inspired, Alison developed the sound of A Fine Frenzy - hypnotic piano arrangements under classic American melody fused into irresistible, atmospheric songs with the power to reach around the world.

Ok, I'll bite. :)

Don't know anything about them, but going to check them out at Smith's Old Bar tomorrow night.

She's beautiful!! Reminds me a bit of Neko Case (New Pornographers)

Thanks for the recommendation Paddy! :)

A Fine Frenzy at World Cafe Live on March 24th, 2008.

Alison Sudol was like a breath of fresh air last night as she and her band, A Fine Frenzy, played before a very appreciative SOLD OUT World Cafe Live crowd in Philadelphia.

She went on and on about what a great audience we were, saying we knew when to be quiet and we knew when to make noise. It was special to her and she let us know it. She said it was their first time out as headliners so it was just extra special to see us all out there and making so much noise. She applauded us.

I stood mesmerized the entire show if that tells ya anything. Folks all around me were gasping excitement at just how darn cute she was when she would turn from her piano at times during a song and look towards the crowd. There was a magic in the air, no doubt, and we all got to breathe it in for a couple of hours.

Alison looked radiant from the moment she walked out in the blue dress she chose for the evening clear through to the end of the show, and beyond. She has this aura about her I find hard to put into words but love being around. She signed everything fans put in front of her for 2 hours after the show ended and her energy and smile never waned. She took the time with each and let them go on about their love of her music or whatever and then stood with each for a picture or two.

I was last in that line and had Alison sign CDs to me and some folks I bought some for, as well as The Official Setlist which sat upon her white piano all night. I knew when the show ended and folks started to clear that I'd ask a roadie for one of the three setlists onstage and I only hoped I'd be the only one asking. When I handed Alison the setlist to sign I told her it was the one from her piano. She smiled and as she took it to sign said: "aah, you got the coveted one!"

Here's what we heard:

Come On, Come Out
You Picked Me
Last of Days
Think of You
Ashes and Wine
Borrowed Time
I Will Follow You into the Dark (DCFC cover)
Instrumental (often only played at home in quiet times)
Liar Liar
The Minnow & The Trout
Hope For The Hopeless
Almost Lover (audience encouraged to singalong and did nicely)
Rangers

encores:

Across The Universe (The Beatles)
Whisper
Near To You
What I Wouldn't Do (new song with Alison Sudol on guitar)

Her backing band was keyboardist extraordinaire Stephen Lablanc who played in total 3 sets of keys and took one number on acoustic guitar. Then there was drummer and multi string player extraordinaire driving many of the songs in the capable hands of Jesse Siebenberg.

Man, I love it when I come across great new music and new artists. Reminds me of the excitement I felt when hearing a young singer-songwriter by the name of Ellis Paul for the first time.

Annie...Can't wait to hear how you liked the show! Enjoy!

Thanks for the report. I look forward to seeing her if she comes to my neck of the woods. And she's got the REDDEST hair I have ever seen! :)

Karen, I do believe she has the REDDEST hair I've ever seen, too. :D

At one point Monday night I thought I was looking at a 22 year old Ann Margaret.

Her debut CD, One Cell in the Sea is stunning on so many levels.

Reaching serious ocd status here with repeated spins........ 8)

Karen....listening to Alison Sudol and A Fine Frenzy today and I was struck by her vocal on one of the songs on the CD as it reminded me a bit of Jann Arden and the sound in Jann's voice that I fell for way back when.

This is the song, a little clearer than the WCL performance.

Wow!! Paddy, thank you so much for that heads up on this band!

It's funny that you picked yourself up and went on the tail end of your cold, and with me my cold was just beginning. I could have easily blown this off and gone to bed early. But I have been way to 'in my head' lately. I really needed to get into some music last night. So I'm really glad I went!!

They were awesome!! And she is just soooo adorable! She works that crowd with her charm, and they love every minute of it.

I got the cd, and have given it one good listen so far. Love it!! The only drawback to the night was.....totally wrong venue for this band. The crowd was loud and talking through much of it. The opener I thought was also a drawback. A Fine Frenzy is such a classy band, the opener (and I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination) had a foul mouth that just didn't fit. Smith's Old Bar is mostly a standing room only club, which is fine normally, but on a weeknight it would be nice if they started their shows on time. Not feeling well and standing on my feet for four hours was almost too much for this old rock chick....especially on a 'school night'. The show was supposted to start at 8:00, didn't start till 9:00 and A Fine Frenzy didn't come on until 10:00.also, I thought their music needed a quieter more respectful atmosphere. Like the Attic. That's not to say the crowd was not into their music, because they really were, there was just way too much talking for me. Being a regular at the Attic, I am not used to that at all.

Anyway, I am so glad I went, and thank you Paddy again for the recommendation!! :D

oh, annie... :D

so glad you went....... 8) and so glad the music worked for you, too. :D

sorry to hear about your not feeling well and the other stuff..... :? And I totally agree the Attic would be a perfect venue for A Fine Frenzy to play. I think Alison was amazed at how respectful the audience was in Philly, and she let us know just how much she appreciated it. It really can make all the difference in the world.

feel better soon and take note...this year's bug, still lingering here, is a doozy.....

here's 3 photos of Alison Sudol in philly...click on 'em for full effect......

Early morning grocery store run this morning and as I'm walking the aisles I'm aware that the late night shift likes to play the overhead music with the volume up a little louder than during normal business hours. Suits me just fine. Then out of nowhere I hear the familiar sound of Alison Sudol's voice and piano as A Fine Frenzy's radio friendly "Almost Lover" starts to play.

Serendipity, I tell ya.

The American leg of their first headling tour ends tonight at The Roxy in LA and then it's "across the pond" to give Europe a taste of "somethin fine."

The debut record, One Cell In The Sea, is reaching OCD status around here. The arrangements, with strings by Larry Campbell, are just so intricate and combined with Alison's voice, piano, and songs -- stunning. 8)

Check them out if you get the chance......I'm sure they'll be back around.

Thank you for the heads up and the great review on this band, Paddy. I will definitely keep my eye out for her in this neck of the woods. Her voice is lovely and reminds me so much of someone but I haven't figured out who yet. And what a beauty, too!

I did, and the Fine Frenzy were in Fine Form!

Between the two openers and all the product indorsement, it took forever for them to take the stage. It was 9:40, way too late for a Sunday night for me. It was a free concert (hence all the product indorsements) so we got there really early to get a good table. They played on the patio of the Park Tavern, with Piedmont Park as the backdrop and it was a beautiful night. My friends and I were curious to see if, now that they have had some success, was Allison going to be jaded...demanding only blue m&m's in her dressing room  8) . She was just as sweet as ever.

When we first got there she was sitting by herself at the back of the patio. She must have just finished her soundcheck. What struck me about her is how tiny she is. It really does make somone look larger than life when they are on stage. We regretted later on that we didn't take the time right then to say hello. The place quickly filled up to standing room only by the time they took the stage and the opportunity was missed. :(

We didn't stay until the end, we had already been there four hours!! and were worn out....so I am a bit embarrassed to report the set list that I have.

Come on Come out
Think of You
Ashes and Wine
Borrowed Time

I hate that I didn't get to hear Almost Lover and Near to You...my favorites.

Oh well, next time. :)

I'd a been mad!!!

Ya get what ya pay for, maybe?

Sounds to me that this was less A Fine Frenzy regular concert and more a promo for something else and they got AFF to play to draw them in.

Shame! :?

Course, the target demographic can come on come out and stay out much later than us seasoned vets! :P

Thanks for the report, annieb :D

So true Paddy! The place was still packed when we left.

If we had known better, we would have not gotten there so early. It wasn't so much that it was late, it was more that we had been there for hours!! I'd had enough, and so had my friends.

And yes, we all agreed....there's no such thing as 'free'. We payed! Just not for a ticket.

Still feeling fine about 'the frenzy'. It wasn't their fault. It was all about the venue. Shame on them, cuz it coulda been great!

Annie

Kinda figured it was the promo folks runnin the show. Definitely sounds like Alison and the frenzy were just along for the ride. Nuthin like being held captive for hours to get to the goods.....

I'm pretty sure Alison was well aware of Delaware and a lil embarassed. Ahh...the price of fame, right?

So glad it twasn't me and my crowd at the show.....

you know we're getting older
