Ellis Paul and Flynn Live on WBZ - May 2, 2009

Postby KarenZ » Fri May 01, 2009 9:50 am

Folks,

Here's a heads-up from board member friend mm! :)

Greetings friends!!
I am extremely excited about a special upcoming radio appearance I'll have on Boston's WBZ (AM 1030) this Saturday, May 2nd (into Sunday May 3) from midnight to 2 am. Jordan Rich, host and great supporter of the arts, will have me on for TWO hours talking with some of the musicians who have been on my Mostly Rock 'N Roll TV program. Guaranteed good karma and laughter along the way.
Joining us for this on-air late night party will be, in order, Glen Phillips, around 12:10 or 12:15 am; Antje Duvekot, around 12:25 am; Mike Maloney, around 12:40 am. Then at 1 am, Ellis Paul and Flynn together in the studio playing live(!). At around 1:30 or 1:40 am, James Duncan from England; and at about 1:50 or so, we'll play a song from Willy Porter's new CD.

Yes, I know it's late at night for us East coasters, but it's just sorta late for the West coasters and very early for England. Think of the company you'll be keeping and the great, great spirits and music all in the same time frame! Jordan Rich is such a positive interviewer that he brings out the best in all.

WBZ is the largest AM/news station in New England and airs to to over 35 states at that time of night on AM 1030 and streams around the world online at http://www.wbz.com. Not all shows are archived, so if you miss it and wish to hear, let me know and I can make you a CD copy afterward.

Artist sketches:
-Glen Phillips is the wonderfully talented lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket, solo artist, and member of W.P.A., a fantastic new collaboration.
-Antje Duvekot is a lovely Boston based singer/songwriter extraordinaire.
-Mike Maloney is a young musician who Jordan knows who will join us.
-Ellis Paul and Flynn are well known singer-songwriters of many years prowess in the field and are great talents. They will be TOGETHER in the studio (now how cool is that?????), surely with laughter-inducing commentary.
-James Duncan will be phoning in from England. He is a member of Fancy Toys, with many ties to Jethro Tull managing for them and playing drums for Ian Anderson's non-Tull tours.
-We'll play one of the incredible Willy Porter's songs off his brand spanking new CD (though Willy will be mid-gig and can't phone in).

I love these artists! Feel free to pass this info on to other fans.
Thanks, Monica Mansfield :)

I hope I can stay awake! :)

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Stay awake? Heck, I'll be trying to stow away in Ellis or Flynn's guitar case. Wouldn't that be a lovely extention of the Beal show earlier in the evening?? :D

Had not heard....til now, of Glenn's accident when he crashed through a coffee table and injured his hand. Monica says she saw him afterwards perform and said she could hardly tell by how well he played. He'll know in a year the full extent of recovery. Monica wraps with a story of a starstruck assistant at "Off Stage" named MARK who was so excited to be meeting Glen that he introduced himself by saying his name was MIKE.....one he's not lived down since....and to keep it going, at the end of taping, Glen thanks "MIKE OF OFFSTAGE" Glenn apologized!

Antje's on the phone with Jordan Rich and Monica right now....Jordan learns how her first name is spelled! :)
Monica is telling the Antje road to learning english here....the road with Ellis Paul...the road to where she is today.
Antje is so impressed with how articulate monica is that she suggests she just let monica talk for her!! :D

Talkin long term goals, the new record with Richard Shindell, and Antje's fashion sense....Monica's son thinks Antje is hot.

He even named an alpaca at his school after Antje... :D

Jordan gets the spelling down:

A-N-T-J-E -- D-U-V-E-K-O-T

:D

Before the news break, Monica announces that on the way to the studio are Ellis Paul and Flynn, affectionately known as "The Indigo Boys" and that they will perform live both solo and together. That coming up in about 30 minutes..... 8)

Also mentions a member of Jethro Tull will be on the show....

Jordan comes back from the break and mentions Monica's MostlyRocknRoll show on cable channels everywhere and they give out the mostlyrocknroll/myspace address.

Jordan asks Monica about her vetinary practice and she gives the location as Metley I think....

Michael Maloney track playing now after a brief interview where he talks about playing for a group of people with a degree of dementia and he said when they told him that after the show he said how you couldnt tell by watching them singing all the lyrics and how it's amazing the whole music connection thing!!! 8)

She relays a zinger question she had for Martin Barre of Jethro Tull -- with help from her good friend Willy Porter!

Something about a frog pond that had Martin laughing!

Michael Maloney talks about the Lennon/McCartney songbook as big influence....

Monica talks about songwriter's processes...styles...how Chris Trapper will call home to leave a song idea on his machine. :D

Michael Maloney recorded song into the break......sounds great...sounds like Beatles meets Rufus Wainwright. 8)

Another song by Michael Maloney plays back from break...like it, too!
Michael Maloney myspace

Michael won a local radio songwriting contest...selected first out of 100 submissions.

The Indigo Boys just texted and they are on the way!!!

Monica answers Jordan's question about who she has had on her show.....

Music I love....she says...mostly.

Six degrees of separation....Antje and Ellis and Adam Ezra (who opens for Glen Phillips soon)

Michael Maloney song plays to another break......wow...sounds a bit in the style of Billy Joel -- very nice!!!

I am thinking traffic might be delaying Bonnie's presence here....

Back from the break....CELTICS WIN!!! Wrap up the series!!! :D

ELLIS, FLYNN, and Mike Clem in the studio!!!

Jordan loves guys with one name names he tells Flynn. Jokes Flynn must be from South America with that accent. Jordan has the boys play a little....they dive right into a beautiful version of Rose Tattoo. 8)

Flynn is called Mr. Flynn by Jordan....suits Flynn fine!!
There is a quip here that has the Indigo Boys cracking up.....but I missed it!!! Anyone have it???

Monica talks about fan base funding for Ellis' new record due this summer, Ellis adds. 8)

She says Flynn has his own great records, too.

Monica talks about the discussion board and the friendships formed, says Ellis has devoted fans, probably listening now!!! That Karen Zundel is probably up listening.....Ellis says GO TO BED, KAREN....it's one o'clock in the morning. Monica mentions Bonnie, and Susan, and Lynn and how they are likely listening.....

Flynn says he write most of his songs about Ellis.....his muse.

Ellis and Mike writing songs about the Empire State building on the ride up.....

Oh my gosh, I just LOVE you guys!!! Thank you SOOO much for the play by play....it's SOOO way cool to see it all here and how it came across. We had so much fun and it went by really fast, and all are home safely. My friend Maria and I had a swift ride home, but now I'm going to bed after I've read your lovely recap. Thank you, thank you Paddy and Patti!!
xoxo

Okay, I tried a few times to find info about the TWASD single and mention of it on Jack's website, no go... anybody got a link..

I need a recap of the WPA, I just read about it yesterday at a "Jaccodine website page", but I am fuzzy on how I got there and the details of record???

I did watch the youtube version of Flynn doing the Answer's Not Enough..

I should have taken shorthand some where along the way.....
Wearing headphones made it feel like I was right there.

Here's the youtube of Flynn and Ellis doing Flynn's The Answer is not Enough
They said this was backstage at Canal Street Tavern in Dayton Ohio
Loved the banter about how the video got out on youtube...

Really nice job Monica. How you put that all together was really something special. Sorry I didn't think to check the live posting on the discussion board and participate, too. Nice work Paddy and Patti on the play-by-play. thanks for getting all that down on cyberspace!.

You guys are the best. :-) I missed it all.....Sue Ellen was here visiting for the weekend because she ran the Pittsburgh Marathon (that's 26 miles, kids!) ;-) this morning....so since I wanted to see her out the door this morning at 5:30am, we were in bed last night by 10pm. I really WANTED to stay awake but just couldn't. :( Got to cheer her on at the 15-mile mark, The whole thing was pretty cool. 8)

Monica, please let us know if it will be re-broadcast! I wish I could clone myself sometimes! You ROCK! :D
