Waking Up To Me
It's been a long, cold, cold night
it's three in the morning
and I'm driving
with one broken headlight
On the radio storm warnings
And I'm calling just to tell you
But you will not believe
that come sunrise
when your eyes are wide open
you'll be waking up to me
I got a waitress at the table
with one coffee, one shot
I threw them back and weighed my options
I've got an aching, Baby
aching to drive on back but it's snowing clear to Virginia
I am calling just to tell you
but you will not believe
that I'd drive all night
half across this country
to feel you wrap your arms around me
around me
Out on the highway lately
the miles, they don't talk back
they roll beneath the wheels behind me
It's a toll road winding
you give time but you never get time back
Hey, if you love me
I need reminding
I am calling just to tell you
but you will not believe
that come sunrise
when your eyes are wide open
you'll be waking up to me
I love driving songs. Maybe it’s the long distance we always seemed to be driving – to get anywhere from Aroostook County takes like a day it seems. Maybe it’s the hopeless romantic in me. But songs like “99 Miles to LA” or the greatest driving song of them all “Radar Love” have always had a special place for me. This one ranks right up there, though in a different way.
Time and distance still seem to separate us from those we love too often. That longing rings through this song in each verse. But the overwhelming power of love rings through the refrain – that “you will not believe, that come sunrise when your eyes are wide open you’ll be waking up to me.”
In most ways I think I prefer the sound of the version from the Eddie’s Attic CD, but I have come to appreciate the haunting “voices in the snow” overlaid at the beginning of the song.
