Song of the Week - Mar. 22, 2010 - Once Upon a Summertime

Once Upon a Summertime

Verse 1
That night on your roof
I had a sweet tooth
You brought chocolate
I brought strawberry wine
You’re waiting on the sky
Dusk on the 4th of July
You kept my hands from crossing the line
And the fireworks exploded
That night it was recorded
Like a movie pay in the back of my mind
And I‘d just like to thank you
For a sacred night that rang true [OR like a song I‘d like to crank you] :)
When I think about summertime

Verse 2
The drive-in we’d meet
In the Buick’s back seat
We’d find the Cracker Jack prize in the dark
Back home your father’d come out
And say “what was the movie about?”
I said “a ghost” – you said “a great white shark”
Did I dream you like some vision
I loved you like religion
Like a prophet – I said you’d be mine
Now I’m singing halleluia
Ain’t love so peculiar?
When spring turns into summertime

Bridge
Love couldn’t lose
How could you refuse
Had the whole world before us
Nobody saying “pay up your dues”
The sky [stars] was aflame
I carved our names
Beneath a magnolia
I told you my heart wouldn’t change
Holding the line
Like it’s summertime

I can remember a couple years ago when we debated here on the board what summer EP was reminiscing about based on movies playing at the drive-in. Not sure we ever came to any consensus. He wouldn't have been of dating age when "Jaws" was released. ;)

Although "Maria's Beautiful Mess" is my all-time favorite EP song, "once Upon a Summerime" contained (at one time) my all-time favorite line. Sadly - for reasons unknown - the line was expunged....but it sure has been fun resurrecting it from time to time at various times and places. :)

It's simply a perfect song. 'Nuf said.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Karen I like the line "like a song I like to crank you" but think the new line is better for this song.. Maybe he can work the crank line into a different song.

Lots of memories ring true with this song.. Like seeing Jaws at the drive-in down the cape.. mind you we went swimming the next day!!

Strawberry wine.. Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill.. makes me kind of gag just thinking of it.. but hey we were young and foolish.. there is actually a fan club of Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill Wine to join..
FROM THEIR WEBSITE..
If you are Boone's Farm drinker, Strawberry Hill was probably your first love and you'll never forget her.

Just holds true to the meaning of the song.. and how Ellis is able to recapture that almost 30 years later !!

OMG Boones Farm. Bleahhhhh!!!! Ditto Mad Dog 20/20. One of the funniest stories of my teen years comes after a night of drinking Mad Dog! I can still smell that stuff ...... bleahhhhh!

I can so relate to Once Upon a Summertime, as I've said many times before. Meeting my husband (not at the drive-in), going to the drive-in, 4th of July. Love the tune!

Was the line changed from another? Just noticed the sweet tooth..

Crank is a drug slang term and had to go I guess...

Like toke to smoke on Hurricane Angel..
