Folks,
This is a new poem that Ellis has been reciting at some recent shows.

My Mother Popped Out
My brother was playing with matches
I told him to stop but he continued to scratch it
So I said “You must stop!” and I started to shout
And I opened my mouth and my mother popped out
Then my mother she started to spew and to spout
And she opened her mouth and her father popped out.
And he started to shout and to spew
And out of his mouth came his grandmother too
Pretty soon for five generations back
The room was filled with people saying “You cannot do that!”
And it was loud
And they were very much alive
And I was kind of scared
Because I am only five.
I’ll tell you this once
Because I never knew
That I had all of these grown-ups
Inside of me too.

Lyrics new poem "My Mother Popped Out"
"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

Sweet....spoken like a true parent!!
Wonder if Ellis has ever had to say those 5 words that we all "swear" we never will say as a parent???

Thanks for the words to this poem, Karen! Ellis told this one at Tin Angel last time through while changing a guitar string. I recall listening and having an "oh sh*t" moment realising that I'd suffered some of the same family tree osmosis to which this poem speaks!
