The Little Red Rose
You put the seeds in the ground
And you spread the dirt around
Sprinkle water till it's coming up rosey
Then you give a happy shout
When you see a little sprout
And you smell it with your little round nosey
That's how you grow a little red ro-ro-rose
So you get an idea
And you see it quite clear
It's as clear as a little white pony
Well you can ride it down the trail
And it's feet will never fail
Give it love, give it water, give it barley
And tend it like a little red ro-ro-rose
You could spread the seeds of peace
To the north, to the east
To the south, to the west
To all the polesies
You could take apart the bombs
You could plant them on the farms
Make a garden out of what-do-you-supposey?
And tend it like a little red ro-ro-rose.
If we'd all spread lovin'
Not pushin', not shovin'
Treat each other like that love was holy
No guns and bombs and wars
Would be pointed at our doors
And we'd live in the garden all cozy
And tend it like a little red ro-ro-rose
You put the seeds in the ground
And you spread the dirt around
Sprinkle water till it's coming up rosies
Then you give a happy shout
When you see a little sprout
And you smell it with your little round nosey
That's how you grow a little red rose
That's how you grow a little red rose
That's how you grow a little red ro-ro-rose
Another winner from the CD - simple words but they convey such a lot. I love the idea that we need to nuture and care for the things we love...and how the world would be a better place if we 'all spread lovin'
Great message.

Love the a capella and barbershop quartet style of this song. Great vocals by Ellis on this one with the added bonus that he's singing all the parts.
Enjoyed reading the back story that Ellis' oldest daughter thinks it's about her little sister. In a way, I suppose that's true.
Nice nod to Ellis' dad, too, who once sang in a barbershop quartet.

He still does!
So many good things about this song. For one thing....simply contemplating a flower... or anything that grows really....can be a spiritual practice...as you connect with its essence....and that in turn evokes a connection to the larger world....so if we all did that.....connect with each others' essence....peace would be the result. Yep. Just start with one flower.....(consider the lilies of the field)....
Love it.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
