yay for new years
hey everyone
my boyfriend and i went to the late show on the 30th - i'm sorry i've been missing from the board for awhile, it seems the last time i posted was in november .
the show was fantastic- i have a set list somewhere if someone else didn't get it.
did anyone else note that doncon was wearing his sparkly jacket again this year? perhaps it has become a tradition.
and rad's voice is swoonworthy to quote karenz i believe!
will post a set list and pictures at some point!
happy new years all!

set lists / pictures are below. from 12.30 at 10pm
sam baker - i personally didn't really care for him. his lyrics were good and interesting but he was way too mellow for my excitment... i didn't write down much by him maybe someone else can fill in.
another blue sky
a song about a woman and a slot machine
ellis paul
1. little wood guitar
(he broke a string and made a comment: every time a folk singer breaks a string an angel gets his wings... thats the second set of wings tonite... (apparently he broke a string in the first show too))
2. (on piano) Summertime
3. (on piano) new song? I can't catch the rain?
Rad/DonCon join from here on
4. maria's beautiful mess
5. alice's champagne palace
6. take all the sky you need
7. 3000 miles
8. jukebox on my grave (johnny cash was singing a boy named sue...)
unplugged and came into the middle
9. down on the corner (cover)
10. wabi sabi
11. blacktop train (complete with audience stomping)
back onstage
12. snow in austin
13. road trip (don con did his best flynn impression...)
14. after midnight (i go walkin after midnight - cover)
15. midnight rider (cover)
16. midnight hour
17. the world ain't slowin down
"encore"
18. way over yonder in the minor key

Hey Y'all-
I went to all 5 shows and what an amazing time. Some of my highlights...
Flynn and the Misfits. Ellis, Don, Rad, San and Janet came out during Flynns 7pm set. They were all wearing coffee filters on their heads and had assorted kids toy instruments. Flynn played right along, made them stay on stage and had a whole skit going. Just hysterical.
Karen is a hoot once the champagne kicks in!
Rad doing his best Flynn impression the first night, during Road Trip...
un-be-LEE-vable!
I can't think of anything else now, I have lots of notes at home.
About Sam Baker, I enjoyed his second set better than his first. He's way too mellow for me, but "things change" is a wonderful song. Ellis incorporated into After Midnight. It was a huge audience sing along at the 10pm NYE show! He is also a really nice guy.

It's been my experience that some artists write and sing in such a way that they don't necessarily appeal to everyone. Several come to mind, Robert Earl Keen at the top of that list, for example. It could be said that their style is an aquired taste....but once you do...boy oh boy!!!
Sam Baker, for me, is just such an artist. What little I know of his music is no match for what I have learned about him of late. It's safe to say that I'm a fan already. I've aquired a taste for his style of story telling, alongside the whole where he's coming from thing.
But I totally understand how some folks might not.
Thanks for your reports...care and SusanH...and your honesty. Ellis said it best when he wrote: "embrace what we have in common, celebrate what sets us apart."

I promise I will come back and write something about the 5 shows I just saw, but in the meantime, feel free to take a peek at the pictures. I know there are a lot, but originally there were over 200.

Wow Bonnie - what wonderful shots and I just love your captions!
Thankx also to the others who have posted comments - Sam Baker is a huge favourite of mine and his UK tour was just fantastic. Guess we can't all like the same music.
Look forward to reading more highlights as people add their posts to this forum.

Mike and I didn't care for Sam either. I like Things Change, but Ellis sang it and Sam didn't!
Did anyone else see him dancing in the back of the room during Road Trip? Waving "bye bye" with a big goofy smile, haha. That was the 10pm show on the 30th.
Great pictures, Bonnie!
My pictures are blurry, but here they are anyway. I edited to make them look more artsy than crappy. All my Ellis photos are in one album, so just note the titles.

I think this account will only be deleted on 1/5/08. Snapfish closes inactive accounts after 12 months. Unless someone orders any prints of the pictures before this Saturday, I will try to sign up again.

Folks,
I still haven't fully recuperated but here goes....
I fear that I will not be able to find the words to accurately describe what was seen and heard in Boston last weekend. With each and every Ellis Paul road trip I often think it won’t compare to the one prior, and each one somehow manages to be better than the one before. This one included!
Kids’ show – Dec. 29, 2007
Passim was full with kids and adults – both remarkably well-behaved. Ellis had both kids and adults practice pronouncing DON CON-O-SEN-TI and RAD-O-SLAV LOR-KO-VIK .
The setlist:
Cat came back
Road trip
Going to the zoo (Tom Paxton)
Because it’s there
Froggy went a courtin’
Abiola
Little red riding Hood (the old scary Sam the Sham song! – with Rad on lead howl)
I’ve been working on the railroad
This land is your land (unplugged in the audience; Rad on accordion)
I like to swing
Dragonfly races
She’ll be coming ‘round the mountain
Encore:
Wabi-sabi
Early show – Dec. 30, 2007
Sam Baker opened the show and well received. Ever humble, I think the reception surprised him as he kept repeating "OMG, Oh my god!" which was really funny. Sam performed:
Baseball
Orphan
Waves
Change
Angels
Ellis came out and did the first 3 songs solo:
Little wood guitar
Summertime (piano)
I can’t catch the rain (piano) This one blew me away.
Then with Don and Rad:
Maria’s beautiful mess
Alice’s champagne palace
Take all the sky you need
3000 miles (mid-way through the song Ellis broke a string; Don and Rad filled in perfectly with a musical interlude that ended just in time for Ellis to start back in to cheers and ovations)
Jukebox on my grave
Unplugged in the audience with Rad on accordion:
Down on the corner (Credence Clearwater Revival)
Wabi-sabi (sing-a-long!)
Blacktop train
Then back to the stage for:
Snow in Austin
Road trip
Walking after Midnight/Change (Sam Baker cover) medley
Midnight rider (Allman Bros)
The midnight hour (Wilson Pickett)
The world ain’t slowing down
Encore – unplugged in audience:
This land is your land (Rad on accordion)
Late Show – Dec. 30, 2007
Sam Baker did:
Baseball
Slots
Waves
Pony
Let her go?
Ellis’ set was the same as the 1st show except the encore was "Minor Key" (with Rad on accordion)
Early show – Dec. 31, 2007
Flynn opened the show and said he was fearful his “friends” were plotting to pull a prank on him. He was right!
The answer’s not enough
Strange
Just as Flynn began “emerald dream”, in came The Misfits (Ellis and Posse wearing coffee filters on their heads) and after about 5 minutes of hilarity Flynn broke into a rockin' medley of:
“That’s alright mama” followed by “train, train”
Emerald dream
Heart of the matter
Ellis’ show was the same as last night minus “road trip” (since the Misfits number used up so much time) and the encore was “dragonfly races”. And Flynn joined in on "Blacktop Train" unplugged in the audience!
Late show – Dec. 31, 2007
By the 5th show, I had pretty much been seated at every table in the room. I sat with Bonnie and Susan while good friends and traveling companions IllinoisBill and Ammon were at the adjoining table. For this last show we were front and as-center as you can be. And there was Elaine all sparkly and Dean looking quite debonair in a TUX!
Flynn opened with:
The answer’s not enough
Strange
Emerald dream
Heart of the matter
Let there be more love?
Be careful what you wish for (introduced with the hilarious true story that inspired the song!)
Ellis’ first 7 songs were the same as the earlier show. Then at midnight:
Auld lang syne
Followed by:
the 3 “midnight” cover songs
then moved into the audience for:
down on the corner
wabi-sabi
this land is your land
then back to the stage for:
jukebox on my grave
little red riding hood (Rad on howl vocals again!)
calendar man (much requested throughout the evening! Ellis warned folks that if they weren’t offended by this song at some point, something was wrong.)
rollaway bed
road trip
minor key (Rad on accordion)
the world ain’t slowing down
Encore:
Lonesome valley
You can see that quite a few songs followed after the midnight champagne....and I'm afraid my table-mates have a better understanding of why I don't (and shouldn't!) drink! After a few sips of champagne, I confess I was shouting out all kinds of things. Like "I'm offended!" repeatedly during "Calendar Man" and "Now you know why Passim is a dry establishment!" with every barrage of bubbles. It was incredibly FUN, FUN, FUN. And I truly think Ellis was enjoying the rowdiness as well....and the fact that most of the songs ended up being sing-a-longs! At least I hope he was!
In addition to the music, the camaraderie and sightseeing done with friends Becky, TonyG, Dean and Elaine, IllinoisBill and Ammon, mm, Bonnie, Susan, Lyn was so much fun. It was also great seeing MonicaR, Jimmy Pollard and other Devotees. I’m still in a champagne fog. Seriously!
Ellis Paul is simply, in all honesty, with a doubt, hands-down, no fooling, imho, THE BEST!
Looking forward to topping this one on the next road trip…..

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
