Gee Bon - I dunno......maybe....how much are tix? I can see Ellis in Charlottesville, Va. at the Gravity Lounge Residency Series for $5.
ps - Don't anyone tell Ellis we are all willing to pay so much more than what is currently charged for tickets to seem him in concert.
I mean could you imagine if the Music World got wise all of a sudden?
Imagine the price of admission then:
Still priceless.

Oh Paddy, did I forget to mention Antje is opening?
While the tickets are $24.00, Natick is about 15 minutes from my house.
Currently that is a steep price for me. Well worth it of course, it's just that my concert budget is a bit tight this year.
That being said. In order to get a $5 ticket, I would have to either fly or drive and that would involve much more cash.
If I lived in Virginia however, I would be at the show every week.
I love residencies!! Flynn did one last November at the cutest little bar in Cambridge. Also another favorite of mine, The Alarm did one a few years back.

Bonnie - no..huh..uh..you didn't mention Antje will be opening.
Well, til just now, anyway. Is that a vote swayer? You Betcha. I think the ticket prices are reasonable given the price of just about everything else these days. This is a one two punch I've yet to see and would very much like to. I'll look at the schedules and miles and all of that. I'll do my very best tho. Thanks, as always, for the nudge.

Todd did say to ME that of all the people at our table he wanted to impress ME the most. And.... when he asked if I had had a good day and I said "yes"...he replied that he wanted to make it even better for me. However...before I was able to pursue that kind offer, his girlfriend called him on his cell phone and that was the last I saw him. (Although others reported that he was seen escorting his drunk mother down the stairs.) Oh...did I mention that Todd is the same age as my son? 27!

Have fun guys...how's this, you guys have a drink and toast Karen and me...and while we're listening to Bill Deasy and the Brindly Brothers at my favorite venu, we'll toast you all, and of course Ellis. Look forward to hearing about the show.

And in a last minute decision, since I got enough done at work this week (amazing how far behind you get with a 3 week vacation....) I will be there. I will not have my lapel pin on (they are at the barn and I won't be able to head over to get them) but I'll be sitting over on the right side, right next to the stage (man did I get lucky they decided to open up those seats the same day I called......).
And we'll toast Karen and Sue Ellen......

Great show tonight from opener Antje Duvekot and the main event, Mr. Ellis Paul.
This was my first visit to TCAN, and besides a couple of glitches during the show (a buzzing guitar cable and a loose mike stand) it was a very nice facility. Good views from all the seats, especially from the front row just to the right of the stage It’s an old fire station which has been renovated, and big chunk of it set aside for TCAN since about 2003.
Antje opened with a short set. She seemed much more relaxed and at home with the crowd than she did when I saw her about a year ago – I think though she may be struggling a little with her new found fame, she is much more used to interacting with the audience now. Her general stage presence, and the short anecdotes she told between songs, all indicated a greater sense of comfort with her self and her performance. Antje’s set list:
Dandelion
Jerusalem (with Ellis)
Christian Boy (with Ellis)
I Was Lost
Diamond on Your Hand
South
Pearls (encore)
After a brief intermission Ellis came out in a dark velour shirt. (He explained after the show that it was really suede…….) His set list and a couple of stories follow:
Maria’s Beautiful Mess (I’d have called you Karen but my cell pone was in the car !)
- here he told a story about his new house and going over to paint it one night before leaving on the road – and having all the power out due to the hurricane going through. After exhausting the batteries in his cell phone and his computer for some light, he finally fell asleep, only to wake up screaming at 4:00 AM when everything in the house came on with the power…..
Take All the Sky You Need
Jukebox on my Grave
-here he told a story about living in neighboring Wayland (some cheers), attending Boston College (some more cheers), running track there while Doug and Darren Flutie were at BC (more cheers), and seeing Doug Flutie in the shower (mixture of cheers and ‘ewwhh’….) a sight he would like to forget.
Alice’s Champagne Palace
-had trouble with the guitar cord here, so he went over to the piano to be a cowboy Liberace for
Home
3000 Miles (semi-unplugged as the cord was still a problem – it was replaced after the song)
Words
Snow Fell in Austin
Blacktop Train (unplugged at the corner of the stage)
She Was
Martyr’s Lounge (with drummer Vinx, who opens Friday at TCAN for Marshall Crenshaw. Vinx stuck the drum between his legs and gave a rather, uhh, interesting performance along side Ellis)
God’s Promise
Speed of Trees
Did Galileo Pray ?
World Ain’t Slowing Down (with Antje)
Way Down Yonder in the Minor Key (encore, with Antje)
It was a great show, and fine introduction to the TCAN venue (who have among others, Lucy Kaplansky, Marshall Crenshaw, Bellevue Cadillac, and Christine Lavin just in the next couple of months). Unfortunately I can't drive down to Marston Mills for tomorrow's show (which is in a beautiful part of the Cape), so now I am out of luck until ....not sure when.
By the way, I think I saw you there Bonnie (or at leats someone with the lapel pin on) walking by me after the show while I was talking with Maggie, wiating either for Antje or Ellis, but I couldn't react quickly enough.

I came to write a review, but Jeff didn't leave anything out!! Not even a naked Doug Flutie!! Great job Jeff.
I was at the merch table selling CDs except when Antje or Ellis were singing. SusanH was there too and she was wearing her pin, so it was probably one of us. Monica (mm) was there sporting her pin too.
Vinx was a highlight for me. I saw him walk in but assumed he was just there to listen.
Judging by the number of CDs sold after her set, it seems that Antje made herself a bunch of new fans.

Ooh ooh ooh, after scouring my notes I found 1 teensy little detail Jeff didn't mention!
While one of the technical problems was being rectified Ellis offered up a question and answer session. Someone asked which CD had a particular song on it. Ellis answered, reminding her she could purchase it on the way out. Then he mentioned that you could take him home for $1000.00. I'm pretty sure I heard someone ask if he takes credit cards.

Man, oh man. I guess I didn't need to scribble my bad handwriting notes on the stray piece of paper that was in my purse. You guys were quick. Good details!
Great show. If I think of more details, I'll add later.
Jeff, I didn't run into you. I did see Bonnie and Susan. Bonnie, that was nice of you to do the merch table!

So Bonnie - I did see you at the merch table probably then (I picked up the Antje CD, along with a copy of Deep Community and a copy of Speed of Trees since I gave my other one away....). I didn't notice your lapel pin then. next time I'll be a little more prepared though and have mine with me.

I hope you saw me, I was the one who sold you your stuff!! I remember you because you had exact change AND you bought the heavy book.
That Deep Community book is so heavy. And I don't mean "heavy man, heavy" I don't know what kind of paper it is printed on, but it sure is dense.
I was so busy selling, I forgot to buy. I have a lot of catching up to do in my Ellis catalogue. Next time I guess.

Speaking of which my only disappointment in the show was not hearing the mythical WHTM in person, although I have pretty good evidence now that the song really does exist since I heard it second hand from Ogunquit thanks to a very thoughtful person. Ellis told me I needed to go to a show in Maine.

Hey All-
I would like to share a coulpe of things about this show that haven't already been said.
First, Poor Ellis now needs bifocals to be able to read the tuner on his fancy new guitar. I just wanted to run up and offer my own glasses
Second, I was at the merch table talking to Bonnie when Ralph brought out a flyer that the club had printed out about the show. Ralph was complaining because he didn't know who's picture was on the flyer, it wasn't Ellis.
Bonnie looked and said "That's Sean McCann from Great Big Sea, I took that picture" Aparently the club came to the website for a picture, and went to Fan Photo of the Week, they didn't read that it wasn't a picture of Ellis.
I thought this was too funny.....and Bonnie did not get photo credit!

Embarassingly enough, I am only posting the setlist for this show now.
One question I have is that the submission says 9/17/06 but this thread says 9/16/06 -- are they two different shows? Or have I got it wrong on the setlist site???
Thanks!
Shari
