Re: Puck Live in Doylestown, Pa -- Jan. 31, 2009
The Indigo Boys rolled into Doylestown to entertain the SRO crowd at Puck Live where Flynn warmed the crowd up with his unique blend of acoustic guitar prowess and soulful original tunes sung superbly on this night. He told wonderfully humorous stories in between songs including the Grafton Street in Dublin one and his one Rock Star Moment while on the music charts early on with Cliffs Of Dooneen. He joined Ellis later onstage, at times to play music, and at times just to play. Flynn served Ellis one of the tastiest looking martinis ever (big ol' green olives) which Ellis tried but seemed hesitant to drink much of on the job -- saying after one sip that Flynn's martinis have in the past put him flat on his back!!!
Flynn's powerful opening set included:
The Answer is not Enough
Emerald Dream
American Wake
Human -- a Flynn song that Cher sang in the movie Stuck on You
White Horses
Be Careful What You Wish For
After the break, Ellis took the Puck Live stage and right off spoke to the crowd saying how cool the venue was and how the low ceilings had him feeling like he was the Beatles playing "The Cave" -- joking that strippers would be out shortly. He came out with his harmonica on and we got to hear it during one of the new songs. He spoke of Jack Ingram's new record due in March adding that The World Ain't Slowing Down is going to be a single, eventually. Applause broke out at the news...then Ellis added a "hit single" would be even better.
Ellis took and played requests......one even stumped him a bit, courtesy of yours truly. With Flynn onstage with Ellis towards the end of the show, they were searching for a song to help wind the night down. They seemed to be struggling. Perhaps Flynn's Martini kicked in or the "marinated olives" Ellis had noshed on had started to take hold. I shouted Blacktop Train and Ellis seemed to think that was as good a choice as any for the Indigo Boys to play. I thought they would un-plug and come down in the audience but there was no room. Took awhile to get it started but they found their way and delivered a rousing "plugged in" version complete with audience ooh-ooh-oohs.
Ellis played a few acoustic numbers but remained onstage as the packed house allowed little wiggle room for the times Ellis usually steps into the audience to play. He sounded great tonight, as usual, often sounding somehow stronger of voice than ever!!!
A wonderful night.....thanks again, Ellis!!! Picked up a copy of Ellis' latest "a summer night in Georgia/ Live from Eddie's Attic" and have to say it's a beauty allowing fans a sneak peek at some songs on the upcoming studio record like Waking Up To Me and Once Upon A Summertime . Worth the price of admission alone was an ad libbed off the cuff lengthy and humorous ode to a fan who'd driven from Nashville to Atlanta for the show only to have Ellis single him out and sing him his very own: Brandt's Birthday Song
Wow! Just goes to show ya never know what yer gonna get at an Ellis Paul show!!!
On this night, we got:
Take All the Sky You Need
Alice's Champagne Palace
Maria's Beautiful Mess
3000 Miles
Rose Tattoo (w/ harmonica)
Anna Lee (acoustic, onstage)
Hurricane Angel (piano)
The World Ain't Slowing Down -- soon to be a Jack Ingram single -- hopefully a hit single!
Once Upon a Summertime (piano) -- a new one co-written with Kristian Bush of Sugarland
Calendar Man (request)
The Day After Everything Changed -- wow!!! -- I think this is the other Wabi Sabi song......
Speed of Trees (request)
Sweet Mistakes (request)
Let it Be (with Flynn)
Blacktop Train (request) -- momentarily stumped the Indigo Boys!!)
Encores:
Home (piano) -- (request)
Wherever You Are (piano)
Great night of music from Ellis Paul and Flynn -- aka The Indigo Boys -- aka Cannondrop!!!
Dang -- I completely missed the chance to request Cannondrop's one big hit!!!
Why Do You, ahem, Mess With Me?
aka No Sympathy
Thanks Boys!!!

Nice revue Paddy, though I really didn't expect anything else
Knew you would have a good time.
Hmmm.. Cannondrop... that would have been a sight (and sound!!)

Paddy,
Thanks for the posting the clever, fun report and for posting the setlist. Someday we may actually see proof that Cannondrop exists.

"Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it. It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.
