Bonnie,

It is with great pleasure that I read your inaugural posting in the annual thread! :D

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I better start making some plans. :)

Yes, great pleasure indeed Bonnie, Flynn is opening 2 shows out of 4, not bad, but I guess someone at Passim did not read the revised "Preamble"!!

I'm getting my tickets too :D

Dear Bonnie:

With all due respect, there was an earlier posting of these shows - but that's okay - no reason we can't have two of them.

I got my tickets...... YEA!!!

Am I dreaming or did I in the dim and distant past see a photo of Ellis in a tux (or DJ as we call them here) at a Passim New Year show???

I know that I have seen a photo somewhere but can't recall where? Can anybody enlighten me?

Hey Bonnie:

I'm hoping to come to the NYE show spiffed up again, kinda depends on what Elaine wants to do, but it's almost certain that it will be black tie (or some other irregular color) for me again this year. It was so much fun to dress up last year. Perhaps others might consider joining in too??? Including you and your bridesmaid dress.

I heard Ellis might do a First Night show earlier in the day :?:, too, so keep the afternoon open, too, y'all...

Can one do a First Night show during the day????

I think we should definitely dress up on the 31st. Hmmmm....so many choices....

"black strapless dress fit just right"
OR
"prophet in a party dress"
OR
"cocktail dress, or combat boots"

Decide, decide, decide, decide, decide, decide, decide, decide.... ;)

When I hear 'Sweet Mistakes' I always picture 'a cocktail dress AND combat boots' it just appeals to my sense of humour. A posh frock but underneath, clunky boots - its the contast between the two that works for me.....leave 'em wondering I think.

I'm in for the combat boots or a facsimile thereof.

I've been known to wear work-type boots with dresses on occasion! I'm all about comfort!

No wonder I like Eliza ....... we have the same fashion sense!!!!

I'll tell ya though, looking back at pictures, sometimes it worked and at other times it's pretty comical.

Being the only girl with 4 older brothers, I was not allowed to wear workboots as a kid. My mom wanted me to be the girly girl, which I fought with everything I had (my poor mother). So, the first thing I did when I moved out of my house was buy a pair of workboots and I wore them everywhere for years. Guess that was my rebellion! Think I still have them somewhere around here!

We're going to see Eliza on Sunday - I'll let you know if she wears a dress and combat boots!!!

I think she dresses beautifully and think that she's one of the most stylish dressers out there.

Well it wasn't a cocktail dress and combat boots - she looked lovely - skinny black jeans, short black skirt with white embroidery around the hemline, black vest, silver belt and when she got cold, a black shrug with beading around the neck and front.

It was a great evening, audience was fantastic and the club had to stop selling tickets a few days before because they wouldn't be able to fit any more people into the venue. 100+ in the crowd.

We're seeing her again on Friday, love the new CD 'Beautiful World' She is on top form.

Hi Jela,

Glad to hear there were so many people there for Ms. Eliza. I became a big fan of hers after seeing her with the Woody Guthrie Tribute Tour, just like Ellis!

I love the new CD too!

Enjoy Friday's show!

Folks,

A heads-up that now when your purchase your tickets for Passim, you are able to choose seats/tables. That's the good news. The bad news is that instead of putting tickets for several shows in to a shopping cart and making one purchase, you have to repeat the check-out procedure for each show. :(

But I'm in! :)

Are you gonna dust off the bridesmaid dress? :) Shall I dig out my pearls?

No dusting required. I just wore it this weekend.

It depends on the snow factor since it is full length, but I would be happy to get a second wearing out of it.

Well it's almost December 1st and the countdown can begin!!!!

If Don and Rad get to do a slot of their own during the Passim shows then I would love to hear.....

Don do Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' - he did it at WoodyFest and it was absolutely stunning - really sent shivers down the spine.

Rad do the song he wrote in memory of the late Bob Childers, I'm not sure of the title I call it 'When the tallest tree falls' again a real spine tingler and so moving because of the sentiment behind the song.

Any other requests??????????

I'll have to go with Hour In Texarkana and Drink Another Round from Don.

Or any cheezy 80's cover from all three of them!!

I'll be there reallyY early for my shift, hovering around the back of the room during the early show. Hey, I'm a volunteer, what are they going to do, fire me. :P

Seriously, folks... I have been a DIE HARD EP fan since Oct. 2007 when I saw him and Flynn in Pittsburgh when I was there on business. I live in Mass. and have not missed a show since then that I can help when he is in the area. I have never been to the NYE show.. Really looking forward to it.. Does everyone really dress up? Not sure if I should pull out the little black dress or not??

Jeannie,

In truth, anything goes as far as attire. You will see everything from jeans to Dean's tux. ;) I plan to wear dressy pants/sweater but wear that little black strapless dress if you want to! :)

Welcome!

Jeannie - welcome to the Board. As Karen says 'anything goes' on NYE so cocktail dress and combat boots it is (or as near as I can pack to combat boots) for me.

I figure if Dean is dressing in a tux and Bonnie is wearing her
bridesmaid dress (don't let the snow put you off) then I can at least try and go with the flow and wear a frock!

Dean,

Thanks so much for saving me the task of posting the setlist. You rock. :)

I'm pretty much brain-dead right now from sleep deprivation, so I'll just say that it was a wonderful night of music and fun. I was truly impressed by the talent and stage presence of both David Coffin and Adam Ezra. I just activated Adam as the latest registered member of the board, so hopefully we made an impression on him as well. ;) EP Devotees are the best on many levels. :)

The Bee Gees cover was a hoot. When you think about it, it really works: Ellis/Barry (the high notes); Don/Maurice (the quiet one); and Rad/Robin (the hair). ;)

More later.....

It is a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are the spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be the artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see." -- Ann Patchett in Bel Canto.

I think I hear a timer dinging!!

P.S. I think I love Adam Ezra.

I am obsessed with his CD already and he was so nice. Look out Ellis, you may have been demoted from my number 2 to my number 3. :P

A great great great show to end 2008 at 10:00 PM last night..... The boys were all in very high spirits and fine form, despite this being Ellis's 4th show of the day (perhaps the refreshments helped...). Lots of fun throughout the vening, from various attempts at sabotage and subterfuge, to the forceful removal of Rad during Flynn's set, the champagne, the Vance Gilbert doll, Allison the birthday girl and the special song for her, a guest appearance form Antje for one number..... it was a long and extremely enjoyable show.

Flynn opened, and his guitar playing was as excellent as ever.

Hot and Cold
American Wake
White Horses (with Rad)
Let Yourself Go (with Rad)
The Answer’s Not Enough

Ellis opened the show on his own:

Rose Tattoo
Anna Lee
Hurricane Angel

(Don and Rad joined him now for the rest of the show)
Maria’s Beautiful Mess
Take All The Sky You Need
Alice’s Champagne Palace
3000 Miles
How Deep Is Your Love

Into the crowd for….
Have You Seen The Rain
Blacktop Train (with Flynn)
Road Trip (with Flynn)

Back on stage for…..
Snow In Austin (with Antje Duvekot)
Venus
I Shot the Sheriff
Riders On The Storm
The Day After Everything Changed (fast becoming one of my favorites)
Calendar Man
The World Ain’t Slowing Down
Allison (mostly Don – for the birthday girl in the crowd)
Martyr’s Lounge

The new songs all sound great ! I can't wait for the new CD......

Sorry I had to duck out so fast - we had to race to catch the last train south out of town so I missed saying goodbye to Karen and Sue and Richard and Jela and all the rest of the gang that were at the show - hope you all enjoyed th ehsow nad made it home safely.

Dear all,
Greetings from Rachel here at EP central! I just wanted to pass on a big huge happy new year to everyone in EP world. It was so great to see so many of your beautiful faces at all the shows from Portland to Passim! Just a reminder that Ellis will be back in the Northeast the weekend of Jan. 10th at Circle of Friends and in Pomfret, CT just in case your insane holiday schedule kept you from this past weeks shows! And of course Flynn's show coming up at Passim Jan.29th...this time uninterrupted!

In an effort to support Club Passim and local artists, we used the 30th shows as a way to introduce up and coming musicians that are thriving in the Boston music scene with the help of Passim and fans like yourself. Thanks for listening while making Dave Coffin and Adam Ezra feel so welcome. These two musicians are working hard to create music, careers and fans the caliber of Ellis'...you are the best fans in the world and I know that it meant a lot to them to be a part of the Ellis Paul New Years tradition. Hopefully you will take the time to check them out further and keep an eye on their careers.

Your support of Ellis and his work is so inspiring, I am so proud to be a part of it all!
All the best for a great 2009!

Rachel
